Goals in either half from Giles Coke and Poul Hubertz earned Northampton a deserved 2-0 win over promotion-chasing Leyton Orient at Sixfields.Orient started brightly and top scorer Adam Boyd should have given them a fourth-minute lead when he shot over from an excellent position. Boyd went close moments later with a snap shot but it was Northampton who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Coke raced on to Hubertz's flick to beat the advancing Stuart Nelson with a cool finish from the edge of the box.
But it took a last-gasp tackle from on-loan defender Mark Little to deny Boyd a certain equaliser in the 25th minute. Northampton nearly added a second when Danny Jackman fired over at the end of an excellent passing move.
Paul Terry went close to an equaliser five minutes before the break when his deflected shot was well saved by Mark Bunn.
Orient pressed at the start of the second half but could not find a way past Northampton's solid defence. And it was Northampton who went on to create the better chances with Jason Crowe heading over and Nelson saving from Hubertz.
Hubertz sealed the points in the 77th minute from the penalty spot after Crowe was brought down in the box, sending Nelson the wrong way.
