Nigel Worthington has revealed his delight at finally being able to name Damien Johnson in a Northern Ireland squad.The Birmingham midfielder is back in action following a series of setbacks that have disrupted his season.
Johnson has suffered four hamstring injuries not to mention a hairline fracture of the skull.
However now he is in Birmingham manager Alex McLeish's plans, Johnson has been drafted in to the Northern Ireland squad for the friendly against Bulgaria on February 6.
Worthington said: "Damien has had a real tough time but he is a strong character.
"While he has not played for me, I know all about his game as I have seen him many times.
"He has good experience at the highest level and leadership qualities. He has a voice on the pitch.
"Hopefully Damien will stay fit and be involved in future matches for us."
Johnson has been away from international duty for 11 months and last appeared in the 2-1 victory against Sweden.
He said: "I have certainly missed it and it is great to be back. It was so frustrating being out and watching games.
"I have not played for Nigel so I am looking forward to that. I have only heard good things about him."
Linfield striker Peter Thompson has also called been into the 21-man squad after scoring 12 goals in his last five games for the Belfast-based side.
Worthington said: "Peter had a slow start to the season but stuck at it and is now getting his reward.
"He works hard and enjoys his football, which is very important.
"Every manager is looking for a scorer. It also sends a message to Irish League players if they are doing well there is a chance for them to join the group."
