The 17-year-old had been hoping to be the first Briton to reach a junior Grand Slam semi-final since Andy Murray's triumph at the US Open in 2004.

He went into the tournament as the third seed and impressed in his 6-3 6-2 last 16 victory over America's Ty Trombetta.

However, eight seed Bhambri just had enough to edge a nip-and-tuck match in three gruelling sets.

It is the second consecuative time that Evans has made the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam after his run to the same stage of the US Open late last year.

Before the tournament Evans was ranked world number nine in the junior world rankings.
