Alan Shearer will not be Kevin Keegan's assistant manager at Newcastle United, but has been offered a job.

The St James' Park legend had been expected to come in a 'number two' role following Keegan's return to the club.

He recently returned from a charity trip to Uganda and held talks with Keegan on Friday, with another meeting scheduled for early next week.

"We will see what happens on Monday. It will not be as number two, I will tell you that," said Keegan.

"It will not be, and that's the conclusion we both came to. But it will be, if he decides to come in, a very worthwhile role."

Keegan already has Terry McDermott and Arthur Cox at the club to assist him but he said he did see Shearer, 37, as a future manager of the club.

In the immediate short-term, however, Shearer's Newcastle role will be restricted to analysing their performance at Arsenal in their FA Cup fourth-round game on Saturday.
