FA Cup - Managers: Benitez accuses Everton

Eurosport - Sun, 25 Jan 20:28:00 2009

Reaction from Sunday's FA Cup matches, with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez accusing Everton of playing negative football.

2008-2009 FA Cup Liverpool-Everton Rafa Benitez David Moyes - 0

LIVERPOOL 1-1 EVERTON

Rafael Benitez: "One team was trying to win and the other team was trying not to lose. We dominated the game, controlled everything but it was just one mistake and they have scored. They were coming for a draw, we were trying to win. It is hard against a team with 10 players always behind the ball, but I was very pleased with our performance. We know some teams will do the same thing and defend. We just have to learn to upset them and to attack."

David Moyes: "We have given ourselves a good chance to go through now. I have never gone anywhere looking for a draw, I may have taken one in the end, but we look after our business and we do things with a bit of dignity at Everton. We got a good point in the league and we have taken a good side to a replay in the cup. From that point of view we are more than happy."

CARDIFF CITY 0-0 ARSENAL

Dave Jones: "There were one or two boos in the last minute when we were keeping the ball in the corner, but we were playing Arsenal so give us a break. We're at our most vulnerable when we're attacking teams, but I can't fault anyone today. We gave it a go as we said we would. With a little bit more composure or luck, it might have gone for us."

Arsene Wenger: "We could do without (the replay), 100 per cent, but let's not complain because we play football. It's one more game to play. If that's the price we have to pay to stay in the hat, we're happy to do it. We are very short at the moment and cannot rotate very much. I could rest a few players today but not as many as I had wanted. I had planned to take Robin van Persie off but it didn't work that way."

  1. DAZ,one man team, not aliverpool fan but I'm sure they beat you without him playing. Not disputing MAn u's credentials, but remeber that they beat you without them, so they can get bye without him, just not for a sustained amount of time.

  2. liverpool are a one man team without gerrard you would be screwed that lad as carried that team for years and shown loyalty when he could have gone elsewhere i wouldnt blame him if he moved next season im a united fan and would love to see him in a united shirt you scousers should thank your lucky stars he as not left as you would be mid table he is irreplaceable in your team you have no one near as good as him

  4. Benitass is at it again. I missed him in the news last week. Liverpoo is going nowhere with him. He can shine the shoes of Wenger Fergie and Mourihno. These are real coaches with real attitude. He is a fat clown in a cheap circus where all the acts are about diving and cheating.. Oh yes, and the captain is a criminal..

  5. Benitez thinks he's as clever as Bully boy Fergie and Wenger when it comes to comments to wind people up...........he's still in the 2nd division and as for his team a one man reliant team if Gerrard another self important player isn't in the team then they are nothing. By the way Benitez another wise buy, Keane................Start writing your CV the yanks meet this week and you'll be on your way.

  6. It makes me chuckle when raffa the gaff(er) moans about teams playing defensively and his poor team can't break them down. For years now teams have employed the same tactics at old trafford, the difference is Man Utd play with heart and as a team and play to the last minute to grind a result, this is why we have been so successful while you have not even got close to the title. Fergie is the grand master at using mind games, anyone with an ounce of sense would not invoke a war of words with him (ask keegan) yet cocky raffa decided he was up to it, now look at him and his teams form. Liverpool rely too heavily on gerrard and torres, without them they would be no more than a mid table team, poor use of transfer money and a tactical ineptitude only heightens raffas floundering. Man utd WILL win the title, we have proved again and again we have the resolve, liverpool im afraid are still nothing more than pretenders for the throne.

  7. Yet another moan from Benitez after once again his supposed superior team fail to win at home. Just how long will it take to sink in that they simply aint that good, have no chance of winning the Premiership , no chance of winning the champions league and no chance of winning the F A cup. Even after spending millions and millions on his squad the Everton boys still showed them what real team spirit and effort really is twice in 6 days , something no amount of money will buy.

  8. It's time for Liverpuddle to stop Benny's whinging. If Everton didn't want to win, how does he explain the fact they opened the scoring? The sooner this a*%@$*** is sent packing back to Spain the better!

  10. Benitez ....... stop moaning, your team has drawn more games at home than any other because you are incapable of breaking teams down. You have 50 million pounds of strikers and if it wasn't for a mistake by our keeper you would be out.
Everton have an English back four, with an English midfielder. Our two substitutes are English U21 Internationals and we have an English attacking midfielder in Leon Osman ........ I am proud of them all we are the future of English football along with teams like Villa as we develop English talent ..... Stop Moaning

  11. The pressure is too much for Benitez first his on Fergi's back now his on about drawing, well if you wanted to win why the hell didn't you. If Everton where good enough to stop you then just take it.

  12. Mr. Benitez, you don't have to blame the opponents for your misery. Your tactics do not work. Your team may be dominating the game, but do they create openings for a goal? I think your gestures in the tactical box with your hands are confusing the players.Do accept that your tactics are lousy.

  13. I think Rafa's gone (what's left of his fooyballing brain)...what negativity??? If Everton didn't play to win, then how the hell did they get the corner (and scored)?? Common Rafa, admit it. YOU'RE NOT CUT OUT FOR THE BIG LEAGUE!!!! Glory Man United!!!!

  14. "gerrard is rubbing off on the other players more than I thought. the diving antics throughout that team are a disgrace."

That`s a bit rich from someone who supports a team with Drogba, Joe Cole and Cashley. Under Maureen, not only were your players instucted to dive, but also to pressure, abuse and influence the ref every chance they got. You want to look a bit closer to home lad.

"My team has frank lampard, the best scoring centre mid in world football and probably the best player in england this season"

    Are you on crack?

Everton would do well to get 1 player in the liverpool team,so shhhhhhhh kids.
It isn't over till Benitez breaks into song.

  18. Everton played with a depleted team and certainly had to defend for much of the game. Without Arteta we had to play defensively and attack on the break and I think Everton were excellent today. Rafa is a pain in the arse and we can only hope that Everton puts one over on him when we meet at Goodison. Moyes is a realist whilst Rafa is a moaner.

  19. Well said Dave.dmbs, my point of view also as an Evertonian. The mutual respect has always been there despite the intense rivalry, looking forward to the replay and a good game. As for the tactics with our lack of striking options and a freak injury to Arteta it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you have to close down space and play for the break or set piece, I will be cheering on the Blues from 7000 miles away.
