Coates backs Crouch decision

Wed, 25 Jan 14:32:12 2012

Stoke chairman Peter Coates feels the correct call was made after the Football Association opted not to charge Peter Crouch over Saturday's incident involving West Brom defender Jonas Olsson.

Crouch appeared to poke his finger in Olsson's eye during Albion's 2-1 Barclays Premier League victory at the Britannia Stadium, something missed by referee Anthony Taylor on the day but picked up by television cameras.

The Potters striker faced possible retrospective action, but after the FA consulted Taylor it was decided Crouch had no case to answer and Coates believes it was the right outcome.

"It is the correct decision," said Coates, quoted in The Sentinel.

"Peter is a good character who plays the game in the right way. People within the game know that."

He added: "Nobody involved made a fuss about it and that's always a good sign."

As a Stoke fan what Crouch did was petulant, silly and not something we want to see from our players despite Olsson's earlier provocation. However, to suggest that Shawcross or Huth would have 'rolled around on the floor for 20mins' is laughable. Stoke might be a lot of things but play acting is not one of them. In that respect we are one of the most honest teams around and simply get on with the game like men. Crouch can count himself lucky, perhaps, but some of the generalised anti-Stoke nonsense being spouted on here is pathetic.

  2. Ah well , at least Jonas can smash another phot next season to get his own back!

  3. What a shock, no punishment for a team against the Baggies. When Tamas elbowed the Norwich player which was blatant foul play he got a ban, Crouch gets away with his which was just as bad. As for this comment by scrote Coates of course he would say this to support his player. Perhaps he should go join the Naughty 40's the Richard Cranium...

  4. Why did he try to poke the player's eye?

  6. Lots of support for Crouch from the Stoke faithful but what do you expect from supporters that follow footb-all in wrestling week in week out. What saved Crouch was Olsson's response......had that been Shawcross or Huth they would have been rolling about on the floor for 20 minutes while Pennant waved an imaginary red card in the Refs face. Nice one Olsson....glad to see there are still a few honest men left in the game

  8. 'Crouch appeared to poke his finger in Olsson's eye'? Well did he or didn't he? Not sure? No action.
Balotelli stamped on Parker's head (twice) - only a Manc Rat could see it any other way. Even his own club wont back him up - no appeal. And yes I am a Stoke fan, I was there, and on-one and I mean no-one knew anything about this until it was drummed up be he press.

  10. don't think the incidents can be anyway be compared, don't know anyone dying of a poke in the eye, however people do die from having their head stamped on,wheres the double standards?

The hypocrisy and double standards is simply AMAZING. Ballotelli's incident can be disputed as intentional or unintentional, but he is charged. Crouch's incident is clearly premeditated and deliberate but he is not charged and no one makes a fuss. Mario has not helped himself with his petulant attitude and posturing, but giveing a dog a bad name just to hang him reeks of partiality!

You cant play for Stoke unless you are 15 stones, over 6'3" and are prepared to gouge, grapple, wrestle and hoof folk up in the air!
All of the above is waivered if you can hurl the ball 300 yards and have a towel sewn to your bo77ox!

  14. Same as Jose Mourinho poking that Barcelona trainer in the eye last season - no punishment

  15. "Nobody involved made a fuss about it and that's always a good sign." - Nobody involved in the Balotelli incident made a fuss about it either. Terrible double standards.
