Davies thinking about Wales future

Tue 25 Mar, 07:00 PM

Wales star Simon Davies has revealed he will consider his international future after the World Cup qualifying campaign ends in October 2009.The 28-year-old Fulham midfielder will become only the 26th Welshman to reach a half-century of caps against Luxembourg on Wednesday and he has now outstripped the likes of John Charles, current boss John Toshack and Mike England.

But the quietly-spoken Haverfordwest product, who made his debut against Ukraine in 2001, clearly sees a time when he could well take a back seat for his country.

He said: "I will play this next qualifying campaign, and then think about my future.

"After this next World Cup campaign I will be pushing 30, then I will look at the situation again."

But for now he will put aside Fulham's desperate battle to stay in the Premier League, and relish a special day.

He said: "I've always felt lucky to play for Wales, so to get 50 caps -and not many have done that - is something I am immensely pleased with. It is something I will always look back on with pride.

"I remember my debut against Ukraine, coming off the bench, my first goal in Croatia and now to be able to lead out the team. These are the highlights.

"To be captain on my 50th is something very special for me. All I want is a win now and for our improved form to continue."

He added: "I have been around with the Mark Hughes side, and we peaked with that win over Italy when I scored. Now we are building another squad, and we are coming to a stage when we are gelling and we are seeing the benefits.

"No-one knows how far we can go yet, but we are definitely on the right track.

"Every game counts and everyone can learn something from each match. We must keep the momentum going in three friendlies left this season and then one more heading into the World Cup qualifiers."

Of the conflict of interest over Fulham's plight, Davies said: "I suppose this is a tricky time for me to be away from my club, we have some very difficult matches coming up at Fulham against all the sides around us at the bottom of the table, that is obviously very important to me.

"But to get my 50th cap is something I am looking forward to so it is a welcome distraction.

"I can understand when managers don't want you to go away. Clubs are fighting to get into the Champions League while others, like Fulham, are fighting to stay in the Premier League.

"But it is good to see something different and to be able to concentrate on what Wales are trying to achieve."
