Holland bemoans late equaliser

Tue 25 Mar, 04:15 PM

Crewe boss Steve Holland admits Walsall's equaliser in their 1-1 draw was a real blow but revealed he would have taken a point before the game.It took a stoppage-time equaliser from defender Ian Roper to earn the Saddlers a point against relegation-threatened Alexandra at the Banks' Stadium.

Holland said: "Walsall have had some good chances and our goalkeeper made several good saves, but when you are leading with five seconds to go and concede an equaliser, bearing in mind our league position, I thought the players deserved the three points.

"We have scored three goals in back-to-back games before this one and earlier in the season we had problems scoring."

Holland also paid tribute to 20-year-old goalscorer Nicky Maynard, who broke his leg at the start of the season.

He added: "Nicky has only played 40% of our games but he will finish as our top scorer."
