Millar targets revenge over Romania

Tue 25 Mar, 04:45 PM

Northern Ireland Under-21 boss Roy Millar is determined to gain revenge over Romania - and a much-needed confidence boost - on Wednesday.Millar demands a passionate approach from his youngsters, who were beaten in Bucharest by Wednesday's visitors a year ago in a European Championship tie, having also lost a friendly at the same venue the previous season.

And although Millar is hoping there will be no repeat of last weekend's bust-up at Ballymena where irate fans hurled chairs and even a leg of lamb onto the pitch before police and stewards restored order to the closing stages of United's clash with Distillery, he still wants to see the right kind of fight.

He said: "We've got a full squad available, barring injuries in the next round of Irish League fixtures, and I am looking for a good result.

"We've had more than a few of those, particularly towards the back end of last season and I am optimistic we can find that sort of form again."

A 2-1 defeat by Israel last month - despite Thomas Stewart's goal - has taken qualification for the current Under-21 Championship finals out of Northern Ireland's hands.

But Millar said: "Whatever happens we need strong performances against the likes of Ukraine and Germany next autumn, even though second place in the group for us now depends on other people's results."

Millar, whose latest protege from the youth ranks, Crewe's Michael O'Connor, hopes to make his full Northern Ireland debut against Georgia at Windsor Park on Wednesday, admits: "It's always about providing players for the senior side from this age group but results and performances are important as well.

"We've got a good record at this level and I want to maintain it."

Rochdale's Rory McArdle, the most experienced player in the squad with 18 under-21 caps, says: "It's always nice to come away and play for your country.

"Under-21 international football is completely different from the league I play in and it gives you the chance to test yourself against the top young players from countries like England and Germany.

"I have played with the likes of Chris Brunt, Kyle Lafferty and Sammy Clingan at this level and they have all made the step up to the seniors since then. Naturally I am keen to do the same."
