Sri Lanka opener Malinda Warnapura failed to reach his second successive century in the first Test against West Indies but his 62 helped give his team a 382-run lead at tea on day four.
Warnapura scored his maiden ton in the first innings and looked likely to follow it with another but he chased a short, wide delivery from Dwayne Bravo and succeeded only in thick-edging to Denesh Ramdin midway through the second session.
Having patiently accumulated runs before lunch, the tourists relented in the afternoon and tried to counteract the Windies' defensive approach.
Kumar Sangakkara, who scored 50 in the first innings, signalled his intent to push the scoring along by smashing Bravo for four but he fell on 21 in the third over after lunch when an attempted flick through mid-on off Bravo took a leading edge and flew straight to Fidel Edwards at mid-off.
Mahela Jayawardene looked in fine touch and added 33 before being tempted into pulling a Sulieman Benn delivery which he skied to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at mid-wicket.
West Indies were given some hope when Jerome Taylor trapped Tillakaratne Dilshan lbw for four shortly before tea, leaving Chaminda Vaas (10) and Thilan Samaraweera (26) at the crease with Sri Lanka 186 for five.
Michael Vandort was the only Sri Lankan wicket to fall in the morning session, caught behind by Ramdin off the bowling of Chris Gayle for 24.
Earlier, the Windies just about managed to avoid the follow-on but added only 11 runs to their overnight total before losing their final wicket when Daren Powell (12) got an outside edge to a Thilan Thushara delivery and was snapped up by Jayawardene at second slip.
