David Beckham has admitted he would be "honoured" to win his much anticipated 100th England cap against France on Wednesday, but has no intention of stopping there.

The LA Galaxy midfielder was overlooked by coach Fabio Capello for England's last outing against Switzerland - the Italian's first game in charge - due to a lack of fitness and he has been left stranded on 99 caps since the fateful 3-2 defeat to Croatia in November last year.

But since having successfully completed several pre-season games for the MLS club, he has earned a recall to the squad ahead of the game in Paris.

And the 32-year-old is hopeful of breaking into the elite 100 club, currently occupied by just four other England players - Billy Wright, Peter Shilton, Sir Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore.

Beckham said: "You always want to pay for your country and make records. I've been lucky enough to have reached 99, but to reach 100 would be a great honour.

"To be even mentioned in the same breath as those players who have reached the 100 mark and gone above is a massive honour, but I want to carry on.

"Hopefully I'll be given the chance to do that. I'm not ready to stop playing for my country.

"At the moment I'm concentrating on training. I'm just enjoying it at the moment. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm just happy to be in the squad."

Beckham is no stranger to the way Capello operates - they know each other from their days together at Real Madrid - and the former England captain has nothing but respect for the Italian tactician, despite their rocky relationship at the Bernabeu.

Beckham said: "I've had the pleasure of having him as my manager during my last year at Real Madrid and I know him both as a person and a manager.

"It's a professional set up. He knows what he wants and how to get it.

"We know we have talented players; we know we have ability and we now have a manager who has vast experience in the game.

"We need to get confidence back on the pitch and off the pitch."

When asked to comment on the speculation he may lead out England at the Stade de France, Beckham hinted that honour would go to John Terry.

He said: "John Terry is the captain and he deserves to be. He's a great captain and he will carry on being a great captain for Chelsea and England."
