Eurosport-Yahoo! blogger Simon Reed believes that we have now seen the best of legendary player Roger Federer.
The events of last week's tournament in Indian Wells endorse one plain, simple and inescapable fact: Roger Federer's performance graph is not going up.
It wouldn't be right to write him off, but it's now irrefutable that he has major problems when it comes to seeing off both Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.
The pair of them have got to him - big time. And unless something changes pretty soon then his days of winning Grand Slams, with the possible exception of Wimbledon, are over.
There's an obvious counter-argument to this one, namely that if Federer was good enough to win the US Open just six months ago, then surely not much can have changed since then.
On the face of it, it seems a good argument. But the truth is that an awful lot of things have indeed changed since then.
At Flushing Meadows last year Federer was truly brilliant, particularly in the final against Andy Murray.
But Nadal carried an injury to that event which would ultimately see him sit out most of the remainder of 2008. In New York, it prevented him from producing his best tennis.
Murray, moreover, was a very different player back then. At the time he was just becoming a major force in the game; now he is established as a major force - and what's more, he is maturing all the time.
That's not to say that Murray is the finished article. Nadal is still a clear step ahead of the world number four, and gave him a true lesson on dealing with difficult conditions in what was an extremely windy final at Indian Wells.
Nadal, of course, was ferocious in the wind, producing truly exceptional tennis - though in conditions so unusual, you should be wary of reading too much into the result.
The Spaniard is the finished article, yet still keeps pushing himself to improve; and the Briton is learning fast and getting better.
Switzerland's finest, by contrast, appears to have his best days behind him. He could surprise us all by finding something extra in the tank to break the mental block he has against his nearest rivals.
But in all honesty, it's very difficult to see that happening. The seismic shifts that will lead to a new world order in tennis began in earnest at Wimbledon last year; and while there's still a way to go before things have settled down, it looks certain that Federer's years of dominance will soon be not much more than a cherished memory.

Federer went on to win the french open, wimbledon and just recently the cincinatti masters since this article was written. LOL dosent quite sum this article up.
Roger Federer is still a phenomenon, he remain the yard stick to measure the performance of all in the Tennis world now. the mistake other players make is the assumption that, if you' ve federer thats it; Well assumption always makes an @#$% - U - ME
Simon Reed please leave Roger alone. You use to call him the great man of tennis and he still is so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
Full agree with Paul Clifford, Zoltan, Kamaruss, Agneszkab, Yiannis and Mendozadiego. Reed will not read this because he will be too embarassed. Maybe he will think first before putting his nonsense thoughts to papers. The "sick" Federer made it to the SF of AO, Finals of RG and Wimbleon, won US Open and Finals of AO. WHAT, WHERE, HOW is be done?? Hello....
I have lost interest in reading any article written by Simon Reed - Especially when the headline reads as this one. I will agree that Federer is not at his best at the moment but he is by no mens past it - Just a change of tactics and he will be on fire again. Federer has forced player like Murray & particularly Nadal to up there game in order to compete against him, they have done that & very well. Now Federer just needs to adjust to this & take them to the next level. I truly think that Nadal would not be the player he is, were it not for Federer. His drive to be #1 has pushed his game on to beat Federer - for now. The last two Grand Slams against Nadal were long matches only snatched by a few points and Wimbledon certainly could have gone either way - It was more the pressure from the records that he was going to break etc. than Nadal that lost him that game.
i am fed up with those boring cliches from reed.
(i suppose federer has done a 'bit more' for this sport than reed...)
hey Simon, get REED of that nonsense. Federer still is at his prime. It's just a lapse of concentration and focus. He'll get back. Roger will prove you wrong. I have so much faith in him, so as Roger to himself. Go go go ROGER, get ReeD of Simon SAys crop!!! duh!!!! the title of this article must be "FEDERER: HIS BEST PAST REED!" well, well, well. (Russylle of Kuwait)
Nadal has lost 2 matches this year, to Monfils and Murray, both play defensive tennis... Yeah, he loses to aggressive players like Tsonga, Blake too... amazing thing is that Youzhny and Blake's one-handed backhands are a weapon against Nadal, while Federer' s one-handed backhand is a weakness ...
No doubt Federer is in psychological turmoil right now. Nadal has battered his confidence and exposed the frailty of his backhand. Fed's serve percentage is way down from when he was at his 'peak', and that's also hurting him big. However, I still think talk of his demise is premature; he has a few slams left in him. It is inconceivable that he won't surpass Sampras's record - especially for someone with his gifts. In retrospect, the lack of a coach to work on strategy vs Nadal and Murray, and help him make small adjustments to his game, namely in patience and protecting/maximising his backhand, has not been wise.
Murray is erratic and will likey remain so because he is not mentally strong enough. He is now superior to Federer but chances are he will regularly disappear from the draw before reaching the semis. Nadal's game is very physical and injuries can be expected. For these reasons, Federer is likely to win more grand slams even though he is indeed past his prime.
He's a superb player for 27 so you cant expect to be the perfect player cause Murray and Nadal are young, fit, fast and strong
I love you Federer!!!
Even more than I love Alex.....
lets just wait and see if how long will nadal keep on top and how federer show new tactics to return in good form.at 27,is pity hard to be strong as ever so whether fed fans like it or not, their idol is getting weaker and weaker while nadal has an injury to care for.whoever comes among the other guys,be them..bec.its a sports.you dont have to say that this guy or that guy is better than the other...lets face that federer is faaaaading..lets wait for the baby to come and be the numbeeeeer one..
federer plays his best tennis in the majors and the only reason he isnt winning all of them is because nadal is playing the tennis of his life.so simon reed can shut his mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simon Reed,
I respect your abilities as a sports commentator, but as a prognosticator I can honestly say that you continue to embarrass yourself and irritate many tennis fans the world over. You seem to want to relegate Federer to the past at every possible juncture, only to find yourself time and again proved wrong by Federer himself. Already last year, when he “only” made it to the semis of Australia, finals of Roland Garros, and finals of Wimbeldon you made it a point to declare his best days past. Before the US Open, Murray was supposed to be Federer’s new “nemesis” only to be comprehensively thrashed in the finals.
It is simply a testament to Federer’s unbelievable achievement in the past five years that you see him as past his best, when the worst that anyone can say of him, is that he is, for the time being, “only” second best. Nadal has a hold on him, that is fair, but until Murray wins not one but 4, 5 or 6 grand slams, and until Murray beats Federer in a few of those grand slams, who honestly cares how much talent Murray has? Federer has always had a player that he lost to more than others, and finally found ways to overcome them on the big occasions. Right now that player is Nadal, who is rightfully number one. But please spare us your depressing talk of Federer’s demise until Federer himself says that he is done. He looks hungrier than ever to prove people wrong and you should know better than to dismiss a player with his record.
27 is old for a tennis player, even as fit as Fed, and it has to do open stance forehand and serve. I would be surprised if he makes it to the 2nd week in Roland Garros, which would give him extra week for Wimbledon. Then if he keeps his point short, he might have a chance, but with a kid on a way, he should take the year off really, and make a run next year for a GS
Interesting ,but Henman said Federers game is very efficient
and does rarely give him injuries.
So the reality that one can burn out the body in just a few years
means Nadal has a career of injuries and competing with pain.
Nadal will blow up later on this year from injury,
we know it , you saw it in Rotterdam final.
Murray said Nadal was just blasting the ball
to avoid any rally. That injury is permanent,
and the stress on the body is excessive.
You reap what you sow.
Federer will win many tournements for many years to come.
It is a pity he did not develop the two hand backhand only for clay.
Then he may have made also 5 French opens.

answer to N.Whitfeild comment.lets talk about the reality not a dream i am also a fan of roger fed.but lets be fair to all of them.roger greatness proven only in two surface in the grass and in the hardcourt.and in the last 12 months i don't think he still deserve to be called as the great.his best tennis has come to an end we must accept what we have seen.there is young and upcoming best tennis star on his way i think he got a little chance out there.he was beaten 3 times by murray this year, beaten by rafa in 3 grandslam in three different surface.including the lap sided 6-1,6-3,6-0 in roland garros. even the old nalbadian beat him twice.and so as gilles simon.his only chance to surpass pete sampras record is in wimbledon.what do you think of it..
well put segunvod. i must say thats the way i see it too.
