World Cup - Boycott criticises depressed Yardy

Fri, 25 Mar 12:54:00 2011

Geoff Boycott has caused a storm by criticising England cricketer Michael Yardy over his depression, suggesting that the player was feeling down simply because he was not good enough at cricket.

The Sussex spinner pulled out of the World Cup after being diagnosed with clinical depression, but former England batsman Boycott had little sympathy for the 30-year-old during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He must have been reading my comments about his bowling, it must have upset him," Boycott told the programme.

"Obviously it was too much for him at this level. If any blame is attached it's partly to the selectors because I'm sorry, he's not good enough at this level... For me, he was always going to be a liability or a poor choice at international level out here.

"I'm no doctor and I don't understand about the depression and I can't comment on it. I've been, with respect, a better player, I've been able to hold my place in the team for Yorkshire and England, I always got picked and played pretty good. So I've not been in that position where my quality of play has been poor and got to me mind-wise."

Boycott later backtracked slightly on his original comments, but he had already provoked widespread anger with his apparent callousness, with several mental health charities coming out to criticise the Yorkshireman's comments. Some described his words as "ill-informed" while others leapt to the defence of Sussex skipper Yardy.

"It is wrong and old-fashioned to regard depression as a form of weakness, or a disguise for a lack of achievement," said Marjorie Wallace of Sane. "It takes courage to speak out as Michael has done."

Yardy flew home earlier in the week after revealing his depression, saying that he had "wanted to be honest" about the reason why he was leaving the tournament.

In 2008, England star batsman Marcus Trescothick quit international cricket after struggling with depression for several years.

  1. I'm ashamed to call this idiot a fellow Yorkshireman. Time to send him the same way as Andy Gray. Except then we'd have to endure his presence at Headingley more often. I think Yardy was brave to admit his reason for his absence especially with people like Bpycott waiting to jump on his back. I wouldn't be surprised if Boycott held a similar opinion of Steven Davies who came out as gay just before the World Cup

  4. I used to suffer from "depression" just watching Boycott crawl in slow motion through his innings'.
Just the sort of comment from him one would expect, don't think anyone suffering from any form of mental illness should be offended by such an idiot.
Why the BBC continue to pay him goodness knows.

  5. What a horribly ignorant man. What else would you expect from him, he thinks it's ok to hit a woman. If he would have made fun of some other illness, he'd be out of a job. Moron.

  6. well what can i say about boycotts comments i take into account what boycott has said about the pressures of the pro sportsman but he only refurs to his day look at the amount of cricket being played today than his time i speak because i watched boycott bat and i needed medical advice after one of his innings. i do feel for the pro sportsman as you dont have much life out of your sport and you lose alot of your family and social life,i say this as i had an opportunity myself during the 70,s and now i am glad i choise not too.

  8. I am being treated for depression and when I read what that big yorkshire pudding said I cried. It is not something youy can just get rid of like a cold and I hope Michael Yardy can ignore this although I know how hard that will be for him, good luck to him and may he get better soon.

  11. Would he have preferred the poor guy beat up on his wife and stayed in the team.....quite clearly this oaf is useless!

  12. Take away Boycott's home, job, worldly possessions and family and see how he breaks down mentally. The words from his mouth are surely things spoken by someone who thinks he has everything. People react to certain things in different ways. Yardy is entitled to cry for help! Yardy is right to admit to having a problem. And as with so many posts, a Mental Health problem is something that cannot always be seen as just that. Very few admit to having it. I have a Mental Health NVQ3 so know what I'm taking about.

  13. I'd expect to hear nothing less from Mr Boycott!

  14. here he goes again, talking about something he knows nothing about, for a man who beats up women and runs everyone else down because he thinks hes perfect it just shows he has a very low level of intelligence. I have seen Boycott push children out of the way when they have been getting autographs from players just so he can be in the front so hes a bully too. Boycott was a very slow average player and boring like he is now, so he should shut up go back to yorkshire and live out his day with his mouth permantly shut. The sooner the better too, hes rotten to the core.

  15. Geoff Boycott was a fine batsman in his time, but not perfect and certainly not the best. Unfortunately for him, he believes that he was.
Boycott was, is and always will be Bigmouthed knobhead from Yorkshire who, talks the biggest load of @#$%, whilst also being an insulting, unsympathetic, uneducated idiot of a man.
He is a disgrace to the sport of Cricket & should not be heard from again, whether it's on TV, Radio, Internet or Newspapers. He should make a full apology to all those concerned & embarassed by his comments.... And then sack the @#$%!!!
Best of luck & a speedy recovery to Yardy!!!!!

From joecourtneyphoto, on Sat 26 Mar 17:27
  16. Just going on what Boycott said I can tell he is CLEARLY not a doctor. What a thoroughly unpleasant thing to say. I wonder what sports psychologists have made of his thoughts on depression and sport. I can only imagine what would happen if players had that kind of support from there trained and practiced therapists. Also it makes me wonder if he appreciates the level of training, research and objective thought that goes into being a qualified mental health professional. I hope Yardy comes back better than ever if thats what he eventually wants from his life, no doubt he could do it again having made it once already.

  17. that's a disgrace, I'm all for free expression but he should never have been allowed to finish that rant, it's offensive and he would have been truly damned by all parts of the media if it had been about any other illness or disability. How ignorant to comment like that and then admit he knows nothing about the condition, Just goes to show that too many of these sportsmen turned pundits can't do the reporting job properly, don't they understand what it means to be objective, they too often just use the position to bump up their own inflated egos, let him go the same way as Andy Gray!

From Claire, on Sat 26 Mar 17:22
  18. Boycott the biggest Yorkshire Numpty there is !!!!! Until you have suffered with depression you will never even begin to understand what Michael Yardy is going through. One of the first signs for me personally to get better and come through it was to acknowledge to myself that there was a problem. Micheal Yardy is on that long road to recovery. I wish him a speedy recovery.

  19. why ae we prepared to even conside this idiots comments anyway

From davidc, on Sat 26 Mar 17:14
  20. ...and of course people sometimes dont hide behide the label of depression. Not everybody who is diognosed with depression will have it. My point, some people will use it as an excuse. I know people wont like this comment but its simply a fact. Not a very 'pc' fact. But a fact nevertheless.
