Calderwood calls for Dons repeat

Fri 25 Apr, 10:20 AM

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood has urged the Dons to repeat the performance against Celtic when they face Hibernian at Pittodrie on Saturday.Referee Iain Brines has admitted he was wrong to disallow Zander Diamond's late strike at Parkhead last Saturday which, had it been allowed, would have hauled Aberdeen back to 1-1.

Calderwood was satisfied with Aberdeen's performance against the Scottish Premier League title hopefuls, but is imploring his players not to let their standards slip as the end of the season approaches.

Aberdeen stand sixth in the SPL but their manager is looking for an improvement in their position.

"I'm looking for the lads to take it on from last week," he said.

"We defended when we had to and we attacked when we could and probably created the better chances on the day.

"If we can do that at Celtic Park in front of a hostile crowd then we have nothing to fear at Pittodrie in front of our own fans."

Calderwood has defender Karim Touzani and striker Darren Mackie available after injury.

The Dons boss has praised Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen, with the Finn having lifted the Easter Road side back into European contention after succeeding John Collins.

Paatelainen has shown his passion for the job, to the extent he has upset some managers, but Calderwood is a fan.

"He has done a wonderful job since coming back to Easter Road," said Calderwood.

"When we were last down there he had recently arrived and we should have finished them off in the first half, but we ended up gifting them two sloppy goals and they went on to win.

"They are a good team and they are lot more direct than they used to be and have two great forwards in (Steven) Fletcher and (Colin) Nish."

Paatelainen, meanwhile, accepts his side must fall in line with Scottish Premier League demands despite problems which may arise if the season over-runs.

Rangers' possible qualification for the UEFA Cup final means the last round of SPL fixtures could be postponed by four days to Thursday, May 22, leaving some Hibernian players having to cancel pre-booked summer holidays.

Paatelainen said: "It's a difficult one because there are positives and negatives, as always with everything.

"It is good that the league supports a club that does well in Europe, that's the way it should be.

"We are hoping, selfishly, that Rangers do well in Europe and any other Scottish club does well in Europe so that the co-efficient helps Scotland have more European places in the future, and we could hopefully benefit from that in the future.

"On the other hand, this extension, if it happens, causes a lot of problems as well.

"We have half a team who have booked their summer holidays already and I believe some clubs have organised team holidays. That causes problems.

"But they've made the decision, they have that power and so be it. We will now play the game whenever asked and it's as simple as that."
