The Acqua&Sapone general Garzelli claimed his second stage victory of the race winning a nine-man sprint out of the break-away group.

Nibali finished tenth at six seconds behind the leaders, enough to hold onto the leader's jersey he had claimed in the previous stage and win the race.

Fortunato Baliani took second in the final stage in front of yet another Italian Emanuele Sella.

Garzelli finishes second overall at 15 seconds behind Nibali's winning time, while LPR Brakes star Danilo Di Luca failed to contend for the final stage due to stomach problems slipping from 16th to 21st overall.

STAGE THREE

Vincenzo "The Shark" Nibali won stage three of the Giro del Trentino in front of Italian compatriot and Liquigas team-mate Franco Pelizzotti.

Nibali broke away on the last of three categorised climbs, the Cat. 1 Passo Sommo, before claiming a solo victory.

Former Tour of Italy winner and 2003 Trentino victor Gilberto Simoni took third on the 173-km penultimate stage from Torri del Benaco to Folgaria.

Another Italian Stefano Garzelli, who won stage two, finished fourth while Nibali nabbed the leader's jersey heading into the final day of racing.

Stage four is a 178.6-km course from Lavarone to the Cat. 1 summit finish at Peio Terme.

STAGE THREE

Stefano Garzelli won the second stage of the Giro del Trentino with Slovenian Jure Golcer taking the overall lead in the four-day event.

The 2000 Giro d'Italia champion beat compatriots Mauro Finetto (Csf) and Riccardo Chiarini (Lpr) to the line after a 179.7km stage from Torbole sul Garda to Torri del Benaco.

The riders had to deal with the second category Costernano climb twice on the final circuit and Ukranian Volodymyr Zagorodny, who won the opening time trial, dropped down the GC after losing over five minutes.

Golcer leads Finetto and Croatian Vladimir Miholjevic by four seconds on GC.

STAGE ONE

Volodymyr Zagorodny made an impressive start by taking the opening time-trial of the 32nd Giro del Trentino race.

The Ukranian rider won the 9.68km stage from Arco to Riva del Garda from Jure Golcer, who finished just 0.02 seconds behind in second.

Croatian Vladimir Miholjevic of the Liquigas team was a further 0.04 seconds back.

The race in northeast Italy, won in 2007 by Italian Damiano Cunego, is considered a key warm-up event for the country's Grand Tour, the Giro d'Italia, May 10 to June 1.
