Fri 25 May, 01:00 PM

Plymouth midfielder Tony Capaldi has been unveiled as Championship rivals Cardiff's first summer signing on a Bosman free transfer. The 21-times capped Northern Ireland international, who can also operate at left-back, will join the Bluebirds on July 1 - the day after his current deal with the Home Park club expires.

The 25-year-old began his career with Birmingham, but made his senior debut while on loan with Hereford United.

He linked up with Argyle on a free transfer from Birmingham in 2003 and has scored 13 goals in 132 games for the club.

"The signing of Tony is an important one for the club," said Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale. "We had to be clever and move fast to secure his services and fought off some serious competition.

"We're very pleased that we have managed to make the first signing of our new summer programme."

Cardiff have not yet released details of the contract with Capaldi, but he is believed to have signed a three-year deal.
