Harmisons At The Double

Mon 26 May, 12:09 AM

Friends Provident Trophy holders Durham moved level on points at the top of the North Division with Monday's visitors Derbyshire after a 38-run win against Scotland at Chester-le-Street.

The Harmison brothers, Steve and Ben, shared six wickets as the Scots were dismissed for 192 in reply to 230 for six.

Despite bowling at a good 10mph below his brother's pace, it was 22-year-old Ben who wrecked any Scottish hopes of a second win in the competition.

Coming on at 42 for two after 12 overs, it was not until his 28th ball that a run was scored off him when Neil McCallum lofted him over mid-off for four.

By that stage Ben had taken two wickets, having Colin Smith caught at slip and Ryan Watson at deep square leg.

Inbetween those dismissals Steve had Fraser Watts caught behind and with three wickets going down for five runs, Scotland were doomed at 51 for five. McCallum's plucky 60 gave hope but it was not to be.

England's Phil Mustard hit 57 at the top of the Durham order but was bettered by Neil McKenzie's 68 from 95 balls.

Surrey beat Essex by eight wickets at Chelmsford with 22 balls to spare, reaching 219 for two to register their third win of the season in the South/East Division.

The win keeps them in with a mathematical hope of reaching the knockout stages of the competition.

Essex saw their aspirations of winning the group to earn an automatic home tie dented following this result, after they had been bowled out for 215 in a match reduced to 40 overs per side. Jade Dernbach shone with the ball for Surrey with three for 32.

The visitors got off to a whirlwind start in their reply with James Benning (38) striking the first legitimate ball of the innings over deep mid-on for six after Graham Napier had begun with a wide as 12 were taken from the over.

Captain Mark Butcher (66 not out) joined with Usman Afzaal (50no) for the third wicket, the pair putting on 109 unbeaten to claim the win.

Kent, meanwhile, saw their quarter-final spot rubber-stamped by results elsewhere despite not playing.

In the South/West Division Steve Magoffin and Vikram Solanki helped to guide Worcestershire Royals to an important victory over Glamorgan Dragons at Swansea to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

Magoffin produced a burst of three wickets for seven runs in 23 balls to restrict Glamorgan to 135 for nine in a match reduced to 31 overs per side.

Jamie Dalrymple mustered 47 to lead the Welsh side's resistance but Solanki's near run-a-ball 69 in response put the visitors on track for a winning total of 139 for three from 28.1 overs.

In the same group, leaders Gloucestershire had Craig Spearman and Mark Hardinges to thank for a thrilling five-wicket victory over Hampshire at Bristol with two balls remaining.

In a match reduced to 20 overs per side by rain, Michael Lumb's brilliant 76 from 51 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes, was the highlight of Hampshire's 144 for six. Former England man Jon Lewis took three for 17.

Gloucestershire slumped to 27 for four in reply, but Spearman (71) and Hardinges (46no) defied the gloomy light to reach their target.

Middlesex against Sussex, Northamptonshire versus Nottinghamshire and Ireland's match at Warwickshire saw no play, while Derbyshire's good start against visiting Yorkshire was stopped in its tracks by rain.

Batting first, the away team slipped to 59 for four at Derby - Charl Langeveldt picking up two for 10 - before play ended after 21.1 overs.
