Shearer warns Newcastle may nose dive further

Mon 25 May, 04:18 AM

BIRMINGHAM, England (AFP) - Alan Shearer has warned owner Mike Ashley that Newcastle risk repeating a Leeds United style nose-dive into oblivion unless he sorts out the host of problems destroying the club.

Ashley was at Villa Park on Sunday to watch Newcastle surrender their 16-year membership of the Premier League thanks to an own goal from Damien Duff.

Now he will meet with Shearer this week to discover whether the former Newcastle striker is willing to take the manager's job full-time.

Shearer admits he has been bitten by the managerial bug and would like to remain at the helm to try to regain Premier League status at the first attempt next season.

But he has seen so many things wrong at the club in the past few months, and for long periods before that, that he fears the club could implode completely, like Leeds who are now in League One, unless major changes are made.

"There are a million things wrong with this club that need to be sorted out. I know people will make comparisons with Leeds United and I understand that. The people who are in charge have to decide what they want to do and what direction they want the club to go," Shearer said.

"I have my own ideas on what needs to be done and I can see why people say management is addictive. There has to be a major overhaul and players need to go out and players need to come in. The football club has to decide where it wants to go from here."

Shearer is expected to meet with Ashley in the next 48 hours and in the aftermath of the defeat at Villa Park he refused to elaborate on his future.

"I know everyone wants to know what I am going to do. You won't believe me when I say I have not had time to really think about it," he said.

"But we need to have the meeting sooner rather than later and make decisions. It does not take a genius to see what is wrong with the club.

"Those guys have some major decisions to make. There are millions of questions to be answered. I will give them my thoughts but they might not ask me to be the manager."

Shearer admits he was shocked at the state of disrepair he found the club in when he took over eight games ago and he feels certain members of the playing staff have let the club down.

He certainly felt short-changed by the lack of passion and desire at Villa Park.

"I am not too sure everyone has played to their maximum. I have told them all that they can look for all the excuses they like. They might not think I have been good enough, Mike Ashley has not been good enough, or Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear and Chris Houghton, but it is what is in the dressing room that has not been good enough," added Shearer.

"There are huge problems at Newcastle. It has been going on for several seasons. The worst three teams get relegated and unfortunately for me Newcastle are one of them.

"I am hurting and I am raw inside right now. We have let down our fantastic supporters and there are a hell of a lot of things that have gone wrong."

Villa boss Martin O?Neill believes the Premier League will be a poorer place without Newcastle, but backed Shearer to stay at the club, saying: "I think it would be great if he stays.

"It would be great for Newcastle and it would be really good for the game. He could turn into a really top class manager. He is like Roy Keane, he can be anything that he wants to be."

you cannot place fault or blame on any individual player, for the most part they are devoted professionals.the poor performances relating to this team, have been created probably through a number of factors,
each player is trained to command a certain position on the field.
A single mistake at premiership level can mean defeat.
when a team begins a loseing run, confidence begins to fall away and the fear factor comes into play, fans often villify certain players for errors on the field.
if the position does not change, very quickly the whole team begins to believe there are serious problems within it,consequently they begin to turn on oneanother, the blame game, further diminishing confidence.the manager mistakenly starts taking advice from certain players ,who,! is not pulling their weight, the barton incident is a case in point, the players turn on each other with dire consequences.when this happens you can be certain that the manager has lost the dressing room, player power now shows its ugly head, the manager is now just a figurehead with the dominant players ruling the roost.
That is why a player turned manager cannot manage.the manager has to be imparcial and control with his brain, and not be influenced by the nonsense in the dressing room,if the team are not getting on,mr manager has to fix it quick, and regardless of a certain players talent remove the problem and restore respect, owens body language of late has been one of fear and inconfidence,i suspect that the dressing room has become one of total anarchy, fear on the pitch from whatever source has created their poor performances.
so to summaries, the events caused within the managerial system, ultimately caused the dressing room to implode, and resulting in the relegation of newcastle united."Hey you are right,we are not all fools and idiots".!!!!!!!!!!!gran

  2. hey up melvin garbage.
The buying and selling of players is a feature of all professional clubs, indeed you might be surprised to know, that quite a few of these clubs owe their current survival by making a profit selling their best players, and indeed the clubs fortunate enough to have thir youth academies, gives them the opportunity to develop players for this very market.eg wayne rooney, etc when these players are sold there is the inevitable backlash from the fans.the shareholders, directors chairmen all have to make a profit,eg the money may be required to improve the stand,eg arsenal.players are sold more seats are added more bums on seats, more cash in the till.other clubs sell just to survive, for a successful club,eg manu, the enormous cash offered for top players gives them quality in the field, which in manu,s case leads to more success, and players wanted by everyclub on the planet,i seem to recall keegan quoted at a manu match "a substitute bench you would die for"unquote.another reason that certain players are bought is to prevent talented player from going to a close competitor,eg saf refused to release heinze to liverpool etc.
Arsenals case is the perfect casebook scenario,a wealthy paid up no debt club, under the guidance of wenger, top players plenty of cash, and yet some of those fans are questioning wengers ability, why? because the last few seasons have not produced the trophies, yet, some of their football has been mindblowing.
The fans need to understand that when they make their comments, there is much much more to the picture, football is a business run on for the most part business ideals.
the glamour, hype, media all contribute either individually or collectively to this business its the cover, the cosmetics, the makeup if you like that conceals the truth.this is what attract the fan to the clubs,to imagine, yes imagine you are part of the victory or glory buying your identity, the shirt the badge, then it all goes wrong.

  3. if newcastle believe that shearer has the quality, acumen, talent, ruthlesness to become a manager, then i am afraid they are very much misguided, the toon hordes as usual are opting for their favourite sons.I must say that shearer cannot and never will be an saf or mourinho, but in all honesty,a top top manager must be the priority for newcastle.thats easier said than done, the structure at newcastle has for a long time now been flawed, any top manager would not touch newcastle with a barge pole,a total clear out, change of attitude, stop the interference of outsiders from influenceing decisions.
If the fans want shearer, then shearer must be no2 under a more experienced manager,eg venables, shearers job then should be the watchful eye on the dressing room, monitoring players performance and attitude.leaving the number one to weild the axe.
Shearer would do well to ask advice from saf,and the like, look at the structure of the top four, maybe then, just maybe newcastle when they return to the premiership.this process may take several seasons."BUT THIS IS WHAT IS REQUIRED".

  11. Let me tell you this, not all Toon fans are stupid. Some us love the game and are stuck with a team which is rotten to the core. But what can we do. Stop supporting the club that's in our hearts? So get off our backs, and get off our site you weirdos.

We deserved to be relegated. It nearly happened last season, but greedy CASHLY didn't learn from his mistakes. He gambled with the club's status, sold decent players, brought in ( via Wise et al ) poor replacements, and didn't get rid of the dead wood dragging us down like Owen, Butt, Barton and Duff, to name a few. Even in January, when it was obvious that we were in trouble, he sold off Given ( hero ) and Nzogbia
( a player without the heart to battle for OUR club ), for a collective 12 million, and then only gave the club 4 million back to spend on new players in which to fight a relegation battle. And let's not forget that for some reason, Ashley then allowed Ameobi to be given a new 3 year contract. What's that all about? Maybes Ameobi might find he's playing at the right level for the next few seasons. We deserve better.

Just think on chumps. If this can happen to us. It can happen to you. People Like Ashley, Shepherd and Hall jnr are killing this game.

  12. Shearer is no quitter, he can do the job, all your troubles lie with the overpaid players that all clubs have, not the Chairman, not the Manager but the players, I am sure that there are groups of players that can and do play poorly in order for the manager to get the sack, these need to be identified and got rid off! players should be prepared to die for their club on the field or be sacked!!! ordinary people would lose their jobs if they continuously performed poorly so why is it different in football? Newcastle take heart, you will not do a Leeds but you will need the people at the top to be strong and willing to make the changes that some people will not like, Lay off Mike Ashley it is not his fault,he does not go out on a saturday to try and score goals for Newcastle United! ordinary people are not aware of the reasons behind Keegans departure or many other things that go on in a football world and it is so easy to vent anger at the figurehead of the club, if everything is as bad as Shearer is saying then Newcastle need to get to work straight away and start wielding the axe, start from the bottom and work up rapidly, get it all in place, you have about 6 weeks! you will need a few fighters and battlers in the side but most of all you want about 16 players who will give their all, win lose or draw every week,no matter what!!! I think you will come straight back up and as champions, but it wont be easy, I just wish I was in football, there would be no shirkers at my club, they would be sacked! contract or not!!! Good Luck Newcastle you have some of the best supporters in the land, now get out there and play the football they want to see! you should frighten everyone else in the division if you can do this!!

  13. Two positives about being relegated:
    1) Ashley has lost money :)
    2) We get rid of all the @#$% players we have. The only people worth keeping are Harper, Krul and Carroll. Get rid of everyone else.

We should be looking for young hidden talent not buying old rejects from big clubs. Instead of paying Owen £100k a week we should have spent that money on hiring some good scouts who know what they are doing and building on the youth academy.

  15. What a fricken disaster. I don't know what is worse.. being relegated or the thought of more seasons drifting along doing zero. If this finally prompts someone to sort out this mess then it could be a blessing in disguise. We weren't good enough to stay up... simple... and we may struggle to return to the top flight any time soon. I agree with Shearer that we have some players there who care very little about the club and the sooner the parasitic @#$% dissapear the better.

On the brighter side Blackpool is always a good day out.

  16. Shearer my harse, he knows feck all about management, all he kept saying was that we will stay up. Well they didn't. I hope the toon army are proud of their choice of manager, and chant his name in the lower divisions. You got what you deserved.
