Megson: We need to spend

Mon 25 May, 10:13 AM

Bolton boss Gary Megson expects to be busy this summer given the bleak picture he has painted for the Reebok Stadium outfit unless they bring in some fresh blood.

Megson has confirmed Ebi Smolarek, Ariza Makukula and Sebastien Puygrenier will leave the club following the end of their respective loan periods.

He said: "With the three loan players we are letting go, we are left with a squad that would get relegated, we have to improve it, we have no choice.

"The hatchet job has been done. I was asked to get the expenses right down and keep the club in the Premier League.

"Now we have to look at a slightly more expensive way forward."

  1. Read below before this one....

Burnley, Hull Portsmouth and the likes before we think about taking anything, and i mean one point, off the 'Big 4' next season. Pete.

  2. Mr Tickle - I'm a die hard white too and I couldn't agree with you more. I'm glad you didn't slag Megson off in your rant because what many of us fans have forgotten is that going into the last 2 games last year, we were fighting for our survival and this year, whilst we haven't been our brilliant best and our points total would usually relegate us, we've done better than last year and we can't forget that.
As for our players, Cahill has been outstanding this year and I think if he'd have been at a 'big' club, then he'd have been young player of the year. Jussi has been his reliable self, and i think giving the captaincy to Super Kevin Davies is a very rare stroke of absolute genius by Megson. He's played out of his skin this year and I just pray the rumours that Wigan are after him are unfounded and he shows our club some loyalty after his many years of fantastic service.
I'm going to be frank now. i'm glad our 'loanees' have gone. Ebi, Ariza and Seb have played well when called upon but they're no Djorkaeff or Bobic or even Moose (Paatelainen). We've got one of the smallest squads in the whole of England, never mind the Premier League and I hope the board flex some muscles this summer and give Megson what he wants. The only way that the fans will get off his back is if he brings in some superstars like Sam did. Personally, I'd love us to splash the cash and get Owen in - i know the cynics will be saying what a tw## but seriously we need someone as good at finishing and as quick as Owen to get onto SKD's flicks and, if we're keeping hold, Elmander's touches, which are sublime when he wants them to be.
We need cover all over the pitch and like I've already said, we need the board to splash the cash otherwise we'll be right back to the Sam Lee days where we can't even get points against the 'lesser' teams. We need to be taking points off Birmingham, Wolves

  3. Well having witnessed the last game at Eastlands I am under the impression that if we were still playing we wouldn’t have scored yet 48 hours later.
Our players squandered possession far to easily, now call me cynical but if a premiership player can’t find his own team mate with a simple pass then we are indeed in trouble.
We are lacking stealth and guile in midfield and an old head to help Gary Cahill at centre back, also Elmander looked good but he was to isolated upfront alone and he lacks the pace to beat defenders on the deck.
Super Kevin Davies was also out of the game being asked to play on the wing, we have probably the best target man in the premiership with Davies so why play him wide? And on that point if SKD is so good as a target man why buy another big lad in Elmander why not buy someone smaller and quick to latch onto SKD’s flicks and knockdowns?
Danny Shitto worked hard but is to big and lumbering I could get around him dragging my granny’s dresser!
Megson has assembled a young fit team but we need a little more craft if we are to get back to winning ways.
More of the same next season, I don’t fancy us against Burnley never mind Man U!
But for Jussi we would be playing Preston Next season!!!!!
