New boss faces tough task - Langfield

Mon 25 May, 03:59 PM

Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield believes the club's new manager will be under immense pressure after Jimmy Calderwood departed on the day the Dons qualified for the Europa League.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee and Wigan assistant Eric Black have both been linked with the post.

"The board has obviously got to get it right," Langfield told RedTV: "If you finish fourth and then this happens, there is going to be a lot of pressure on the next manager. But hopefully the players will give their all and the new manager gets the right response."

The club announced Calderwood and coaching staff Jimmy Nicholl and Sandy Clark had left by mutual consent hours after a 2-1 victory over Hibernian secured fourth place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

It appears Calderwood, who stressed he had "definitely not" got another job lined up and repeated his love for the club and city, was left with little option but to accept a pay-off.

The former Dunfermline manager, who had two years left on his contract, secured top-six finishes in each of his five seasons in charge.

And the win over Hibs ensured the Dons ended up in the top four in all but one year under Calderwood as they again pipped Craig Levein's highly-rated Dundee United side.

As well as a new coaching staff, Aberdeen are likely to be seeking another captain with Scott Severin set to depart.

The 30-year-old, who has been at Pittodrie as long as Calderwood, has yet to be offered a suitable new deal.

Severin said: "I have really enjoyed my time here and what a way to finish it off, by taking the club back into Europe. If the board want to come back to me I'll sit down and listen to what they have to say. I have to look after myself so I'll have to speak to people as well."

  1. well its jamie miller , scott severin , lee mair , are all out of contract end of the season, and vidal the loan player is back at man city now doubt he shall return for the new season now . So that 4 players aberdeen are down . So it look likes another rebuilding job at aberdeen fc again, looks like we are back to ebbi skodal again , aye @#$% football and a low bottom 6 finish. Willie miller , the board and Stewart Milne have got no vision and should pack there bags and go as we dont want them we want donald trump, (stewart milne aberdeen does not want u pack ur bags and go do us all a favour ) ok before i @#$% down to pittodrie and kick u in the leg.

  2. Stewart Milne is a parasite who has no interest in Aberdeen fc. I cannot understand why he gave the two jimmy's and sandy clark new 2.5 year extensions in january only to pay them up at the end of the season costing £500,000. Surely this money would have been better spent on player retention and additions to the squad.
Calderwood should have been given another 2 years and given funds by the board. Stewart Milne is only in Aberdeen FC for what he can get out of it. If only he gave the managers the same money to spend that he has used to pay up their contracts when
firing them then we might have a chance.

  4. Lets be honest we were not going to get any better under Calderwood he took us as far as he could if the board was willing to back him the maybe he would have taken us further but they are not in a posistion to do that and we need to look at other people the like of McGhee or Black we also need two new strikers alongside lee miller we have a good side and lee mair aint a loss seve is but we got over nicholson going so we can get over him going so lets look forward to next season with hope COME on YE reds
