Walter Smith has paid tribute to Gordon Strachan for doing an excellent job at Celtic over the last four years.
Strachan quit the Parkhead club on Monday after failing in his quest to win a fourth successive championship.
During his time in the east end of Glasgow, Strachan guided the Hoops to three consecutive league titles and the last 16 of the Champions League twice. And, despite pipping him to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title at the weekend, Smith believes the former Celtic boss deserved more credit.
He said: "I've been on record as saying that I find it very difficult the criticism that Gordon takes. A football manager has to be successful and I think Celtic have been extremely successful, not just in domestic circumstances but also in European games.
"I don't think that Scottish teams in recent years have had the credit for how they do. Rangers and Celtic get criticised for their European performances but we don't compete on the same field as a lot of the teams who are involved in the Champions League financially.
"We do so domestically and when we win the league, people make allowances for all the other clubs who can't challenge us. But they don't make allowances for us when we are unable to challenge in the Champions League. I think Gordon Strachan has done an excellent job at Celtic over the last few years."

Well said Walter. Typical Celtic fans- too dumb to appreciate what they have until its gone. Even though i'm not a Rangers fan, well done to them for their well deserved victory in the SPL.

jones girl you need to do what you done on sunday and shut your racist gob-you can't even show a ounce of respect for a man who always conducts himself with respect and humility, even when he's talking about your own teams achievements.you are a fool girl.
sirstevejones. Do you know you can receive psychiatric help on the NHS. Make initial contact with your GP and ask for a referral. Honestly, you can really benefit. You are sick and full of hatred. Please seek help soon.
mrandmrscochrane, i tried singing that and it doesn't go, tried it to the tune of happy birthday and it was even worse, stick to being an english bigoted hun because you'll never be a Scottish Warrior Poet.
Class acts both Walter and Gordon. Hope he doesn't go to Sunderland. He deserves better.
Celtic have money but that does not buy you the league or a manager hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, C'mon the Gers.
The wee man did good, it's just the fans ask too much.
Walter smith yet again talks sense!!!! Although i am a rangers fan i think strachan did a good job at celtic considering the lack of funds from the board,i didnt like his attitude at times in interviews but you got to give the wee man credit for the trophies he has won and the job he done at celtic, if mark maghee gets the job at celtic as its been reported then god help celtic,if he can just keep motherwell out the drop zone then i think he will only make celtic worse.
