Strachan tight-lipped over future

Mon 25 May, 09:19 AM

Gordon Strachan gave no clue as to his future at Celtic Park after he watched his side hand over the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title to Rangers on Sunday.

Radio phone-ins and fans websites were besieged by irate fans after the Hoops drew a blank against Hearts at Parkhead as Rangers were winning 3-0 at Dundee United to take the championship by four points.

Former Coventry and Southampton boss Strachan said: "At this moment in time, we'd like to thank the players and staff; they gave it their best shot. I'd like to thank supporters; it wasn't easy for them. We weren't up for the challenge of winning four in a row."

He added: "It is disappointing but we have only ourselves to blame.

"We will analyse it later on but it doesn't take a genius to see that, in some areas, we weren't as good as we have been in the last three years."

Strachan then praised his great rivals before hastily departing.

"Then we go on to the next part and we say well done to Rangers," he said.

"We say well done to Walter (Smith), Ally (McCoist), Kenny (McDowall), and Jim (Stewart) and their players because we know how difficult it is; it's not easy to win championships. There is a lot that goes on.

"We congratulate them and I'm sure we will give them a run for their money next year. We congratulate them because we think we can win with dignity and hopefully lose with dignity. That's basically it for today; there is plenty of time to think about it for the next few days."

Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo, meanwhile, played down speculation he is set to leave the club, saying: "I have two years left on my contract and my children are going to school here so I would like to stay. My priority is Hearts but I need help to build a new team."

  1. lol no league title now no manager mon the gers lol

  2. Firstly, neither celtic nor rangers deserved to win the league this year. The standard of football from both teams was absolutely shocking.
Secondly, If both teams had been in the epl this season and played the way they have neither newcastle nor middlesbrough would have been relegated. Celtic and rangers would have struggled big time playing the way they did. As for the champions league next season celtic will be very lucky to get into the group stages and rangers will be lucky to get into the europa cup. That's how bad i feel they have been.
Thirdly, Strachan is non committal on his future. A move to Sunderland maybe??

Next season, rangers will be in big trouble as they can't spend money they don't have and will ahve to rely on free's and Bosman's. Hardly an inspiring popsition to be in.
As for celtic, we may be debt free but WTF does that matter if we can't put a team on the park.
For any club to surrender a seven point lead not just once but twice is in excusable and I for one lay the blame at the feet of overpaid underachievers.
An earlier post spoke of a cull at parkhead, but there will be a cull in both sides of Glasgow.
I may be wrong here but if celtic had won the league it would have been with the lowest number of points in the history of the spl, rangers have won this with the second lowest number of points ever. This has not been a good season for scottish footbal on the whole.
Compacency and poor morale have cost celtic the title this year and to be fair rangers took their chances and won. Celtic lost the league as much as rangers won it.
The games that celtic and rangers have lost this season have not been down to the other teams being of a higher standard its down to the fact that both celtic and rangers have been a disgrace.
Finally, congratulations to the huns. Enjoy it because you'll get nowhere in europe and we'll be lucky to get there.

  4. Jane A, you really are a thick and stupid woman, though you are probably more a bloke than a woman, did you actually finish high school, or even go in the first place?? rangers £74m in debt, HBOS (Halifax Bank Of Scotland before you ask what that means) wanting their money back pronto. Hmmm I wonder how many top-class players you will be signing this season, I hear Jimmy Calderwood is looking for a new club, maybe he could partner Weir in central defence afterall they are the same age. Say goodbye to fat boyd, novo the provos don't want him, can I count to ten ferguson, my girlfriend isn't white trash mcgregor, player of the year (after 3 games) mendas. What kinda team are you gonna have then???

    Janko for Celtic!!!!

  9. Jane...go and get the hoover out.....Enjoy the moment....as for the January sales, Celtic had money to spend and if anyone had wanted Boyd etc then you would not have won the league....if Rangers hold on to Davis, Boyd, Boogie which I doubt then it will be a good league next year....but I cant see it.....Davis to Fulham, Boyd and boogie to Birmingham

  11. Have to laugh at the references to a biscuit tin, when Celtic are in profit and the huns are about £40 million in debt. Celtic could buy and sell that hole in Govan.

    From divastrop1, on Mon 25 May 10:14AM
  12. The big cull will be at Parkhead rather than Ibrox, maybe they should have opened the biscuit tin in January LOL WATP
