Wenger to look at Gunners squad

Mon 25 May, 10:15 AM

Arsene Wenger will take time to analyse whether his current Arsenal squad is "strong enough" to challenge for the Barclays Premier League title next season.

The Gunners swept aside Stoke 4-1 at Emirates Stadium on Sunday with three quick first-half goals to sign off in style from what has been a difficult campaign. Arsenal, secure in fourth, had little left to play for after going out of both the FA Cup and Champions League at the semi-final stage.

"After a dodgy start, in the last 23 games we lost just once, so the team is moving forwards," said the Frenchman. "The question we have to analyse now is: are we strong enough like that to win the championship next year? If not, what do we need to add to the squad? That is the basic question we need to answer."

He added: "There is some great quality here, that is for sure, the squad is very young, so it is about what is needed to be added next year to challenge for the championship.

"It is important not to go into conclusions straight away. I have to analyse well and then make decisions after."

Wenger believes it is crucial to keep the likes of leading scorer Robin van Persie, who took his goals tally to 20 with a double against Stoke.

"We want to extend the contract of Robin. It is the priority to extend the contract of [Nicklas] Bendtner as well," said the Arsenal manager.

"The basic problem is to get round the table. We did that already a few times, but we always got delayed afterwards. We want Robin to stay, he wants basically to stay, but he still has two years to go."

  1. We need Brede Hangeland\vermeulen\Wheater\Cahill\Mica h Richard\Momodu Sakho --either 2 out of these, We need Alonso\Veloso\Cabaye\Barry\Muntari\ Cana...2 out of these would be solid, but i think Arsene will sign One. For strikers, If Adebayor is sold, Gourcuff\Hazard
    Dzeko\Huntelaar

2 of these might be signed

  2. I agree with most comments here. I believe we need to keep our faith in Mr Wenger. He has done it before, surely he can do it again. I'm sure it is clear to everyone that we need another strong defensive midfielder like Viera. So may i suggest some one like Sulley Muntari or Yaya Toure. We also need a center back, maybe Micah Richards or Brede Hangeland. These are becoming a necessity to an Arsenal team who i'm sure are tired of coming second and third, just like us.

  3. Arsene Wenger will need to spend money on a centre-back, a midfielder and a striker.

I will go for Micah Richards of Manchester City, Gareth Barry and John Carew both of Aston Villa.

I think next season we'll defintely be challenging for the title, also to a least get to the Champions League final and win it.

Arsenal fans should stick with Wenger. Alright we've had a disappointing season, but we'll make up for it next season.

So watch out United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

  5. I believe so much on ur output, nice games so far played, but am kneelin to u to reconsider our mid-field and generally our defenders,it wont hurt us if we come out of the upcomin season wit a trophy, once again i appreciate ur effort so far

  8. The match against Stoke showed once again that our defence are not very good in the Air. They hardly won any headers when the Stoke goalkeeper sent the ball towards his attackers. The defence and mid field is the most important area to sort out. Our attack players (except Ade) are up to it. We have Arshavin, walcott, bentdner, van Persia,Eduardo and possibly Rosisky, vela and others, who if they shoot more often, then we can cause any team trouble.

  9. As a matter of fact, Arsenal is rejuvenated but missing badly a leader or maybe the kinda platini-tigana-giresse. A car with a good engine will go on all the way, so is a team with some quality midfield players. Fabregas needs help. Just have a look at Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool midfields and where are they in the table? I believe Mr Wenger got me there:)

  10. Proff, though not too bad a season, but for the club to lose out in two semi finals, what we need do is to be more focus next season, start right and early and at the end of the day a silverware or two might come away way.
    All yhe best

  11. Mr. Wenger with our current squad it is obvious we are not strong enough it dosn't take a genious to work that out - we have to allow for injuries which we seem to get a lot of and we certainly need a couple of centre backs and an out and out striker and a holding mid field player like Alonso - please buy some players as we need the depth in the squad to cover for injuries especially if we are going to challenge for the champions league - and please dont take too long because all the good players would have been sold or signed up - thank you x
