Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins has admitted the club have made a tentative enquiry about signing Cheltenham striker Steve Gillespie.The Robins turned down a substantial bid for the 23-year-old from an unnamed club on Tuesday and Adkins has now revealed he is a keen admirer of the former Liverpool trainee, who scored 16 goals last season.

"Steven is a player we have watched for some time," Adkins told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"I have made an inquiry about him to manager Keith Downing.

"I am aware that another club are interested and I am aware of the size of the bid that has been put in.

"That makes us aware of what we need to do if we want to pursue our interest."
