Hoops supremo makes transfer vow

Wed 25 Jun, 03:45 PM

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has promised more new signings this summer, with only Pat McCourt having joined the Bhoys so far.The Scottish champions are chasing a fourth consecutive title and manager Gordon Strachan has been told he will have the funds to strengthen his squad.

The Hoops boss spent part of the summer as a television pundit at Euro 2008, allowing him to assess the cream of European talent first hand.

However, Derry City midfielder McCourt is the only new signing so far, while rivals Rangers have already recruited strikers Kenny Miller, Kyle Lafferty and Andrius Velicka.

But Lawwell has told fans they have nothing to worry about.

"I can assure Celtic supporters that we are working hard once again to strengthen the squad for the coming season," he said.

"Clearly, we have a squad of high-quality, talented players at the club and we were delighted that this team worked so hard to lift the club's third championship in a row.

"However, it is always important to look to the future and therefore we will be doing all we can to support Gordon in his plans and try to ensure that we maintain our position at the top of Scottish football.

"Celtic supporters can rest assured that the Celtic board, as it has done in recent seasons, will continue to support the manager as we try to retain our championship and once again aim to make an impact in the Champions League."

Celtic have been linked with several players and Lawwell said the club were working hard behind the scenes to secure their targets.

He told the club's website: "We have only made two bids for players, one of which was accepted for Patrick McCourt.

"Any other claims that we have made bids for other players are nonsense.

"Clearly, we do have our own real targets and we are working to secure these."

  6. Yes im afraid i agree its the same old story - bringing in loan players and others that are just not good enough. We have this every year promises promises and then peanuts. We always leave it late. Still i have not given up completely - fingers crossed. Michael

  7. Sorry--but as a disallusioned tic fan--i'm not buying it.We have this same speech every year and not much strenthening---Gary Caldwell for example, was brought in to strengthen but ironically he'd be the first to feel the axe if it were i strengthening the side.Back to the biscuit tin I feel.We probably have mils left from the Petrov sale let alone what we've brought in since. Why aren't we spending big--or biggish????
