Metzelder hoping for Spain showdown

Wed 25 Jun, 12:45 PM

Germany's Christoph Metzelder is keeping his fingers crossed for a Euro 2008 final showdown with Spain and some of his Real Madrid colleagues.Germany and Spain are favourites going into their respective semi-finals against Turkey and Russia, and Metzelder would be delighted to see those two teams meet in Sunday's final in Vienna.

"I would love to play against Spain in the final. But first we need to beat Turkey and then hope that Spain beat Russia and we are able test ourselves against each other in a great game," said Metzelder, who joined Madrid last summer and is club-mates with Spain duo Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos.

"Spain is the country where I live now and I have a very special relationship with this nation."

He added: "Spain have a very strong team with a lot of quality, but it is also true that Germany have a lot of strength, above all with regards to mentality. We are the two favourites."

Before the possibility of meeting Spain in the final though, Germany must overcome Fatih Terim's Turkey in Basle on Wednesday night - a match Metzelder believes will be no walk in the park for his side.

"The game against Turkey we know will be difficult because they are a team who fight until the end," the 27-year-old said.

"It will not be easy, they have some players who are going to run and fight so as to not lose their chance of being in a big final. But we are going to give it everything and we are ready to win," he told the club's website.
