Confederations Cup - Del Bosque stunned by Spain loss

Eurosport - Thu, 25 Jun 11:54:00 2009

Spain were caught by surprise by the United States when the European champions lost 2-0 in the Confederations Cup semi-final, said coach Vicente del Bosque.

FOOTBALL 2009 Confederations Cup Benny Feilhaber of USA celebrates 2-0 win over Spain as Fernando Torres hides his face - 0

"They had huge energy, were very quick in attack and caught us by surprise," he said after the Americans set up a final clash with Brazil or hosts South Africa on Sunday.

Goals from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey ended Spain's world record run of 15 successive victories and their 35-match unbeaten sequence, a world record streak they share with Brazil.

"It's never good to lose, we are not used to losing any more," added Del Bosque.

"Every defeat hurts but we will now try to win our next game (Sunday's third place play-off) and then turn our attention to securing World Cup qualification."

Del Bosque was pleased with Spain's work rate and said all they lacked was decent finishing.

"We cannot be unhappy with our effort," he said. "We tried everything to win.

"Today we missed that final touch. We had many opportunities but they really closed the door for us.

"We have to accept this defeat but I believe we are still formulating a team that can go on strongly. We are at peace, even in defeat."

United States coach Bob Bradley said neutralising Spain midfielder Xavi was the key to their win.

The Barcelona playmaker was allowed little room to manoeuvre by a tigerish American side who reached their first major final.

"We made a special point to close down Xavi, trying to force him to play the ball square or behind him so that he couldn't play any of those penetrating passes he is so good at," Bradley said.

"We did a very good job of sealing down the middle of the field. When you play Spain you have to work hard as a group to defend and when we had the ball we needed to be aggressive."

Bradley paid special tribute to central defenders Jay DeMerit and Oguchi Onyewu, who thwarted a furious Spanish onslaught in the second half.

"To go from the first two games and concede six goals to the next two games and not concede any is a tremendous effort from everybody on the team," said Onyewu.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard added: "We are scratching our heads just like you guys are but it goes to show what hard work and commitment to each other can bring. Football is a funny thing.

"Any time you come away with a shock win you need to take your chances in front of goal and we defended like bandits. We rode our luck today."

  1. Spain played like Brazil some years back. They think they are so much better than the other team that result will come their way.
It's OK. This is a wake up call. They will perform in next year's WC.
Bad news for USA. You got respect but no teams will take you lightly now. USA won't get out of their group. Whoever they have in the group.

  2. Maxx92 The Egyptian defender handled the ball on the line, there is absolutely NO question that he kept the ball out the net with his upper arm. Therefore Brazil were not handed anything and the standards of refereeing have been very high so far in this competition. You sound like your getting ready for a thrashing in the final and are already looking for excuses. To be honest I am disappointed that Spain and Brazil will not meet in the final, it had so much potential to be a great match, two attacking sides who really know how to play football. The USA are a good, honest, hard working team and nothing more.

  4. Ola. I am not surprised with the result. They defend like only the Spaniards know how. Have you ever seen how Real Madrid, or any other Spanish team, defend? They can't do a decent job in defence. If they face good defenders and half decent attackers they lose. Simple. Teams should learn from the USA and Chelsea how to defend and attack a Spanish team. Especially the USA. They never sat back. They went at them and yet kept disciplined defending. Spanish teams are beatable. Just don't sit back. Stiffle their midfield and you undo them. That's why teams like Liverpool find it easy beating Spanish teams home and away. Disciplined attack and defence. - Chelsea suppporter

  5. i knew they were on their way out when i saw alonsos face before the match- very smug and believing his own team's hype. They were caught out because they misunderestimated US's tenacity. now I'm sure they won't take a match for granted!

  6. Man U got tactics wrong against Barcelona in Champ league final, unlike chelsea who deserved to get through the semis. There is no doubting that Spain play good passing football, and it is nice to watch. However like Barca, if you can stop them playing, they are beatable. I don't agree they were not interested in winning this tournament, otherwise would have gone out at group stage maybe. I think England could beat the likes of Spain when it matters with right approach, but obviously the World Cup will be a totally different matter.

  7. Note to Egypt: Listen to the Spanish coach on how to accept a tough loss in a tournament. World class team top to bottom.

  8. Great USA! Although supported Spain it was still a great win. The only way the US soccer team (and home tournament) can thrive is for the US nation to be behind its teams and when something great is achieved it raises awareness. Why is Football great? anyone can play it, initially without great skills, as kids, we used to place two jumpers to mark the goal or use a garage door and kick the ball around, without needing nets or other expensive gear. Go US!

  9. It feels real good to be a US soccer fan. Watching them defend was like watching sharks in a feeding frenzy. The ref still tried to hand the game over to Spain with the phony Bradley red card, the way they handed Brazil the win over Egypt. Fifa will never do anything about it, because if you're not Europe, Brazil, and Argentina, they don't want you to win. No knock on Spain who are just amazing to watch. It's a Fifa thing that affects every major tournament. Great win but, when is Donovan going take that shot in a critical situation? He will never be 'the man' until he learns to bury that shot.

  10. Spain were sitting back as they thought they had an 'easy ride' into the final, there is no such thing, even against the lowest ranked country. When they went 1-0 down they still didnt look like they wanted it and what was ramos doing taking a touch infront of his own goal, doesnt matter if you have feet like michael flatley and can dance the ball around on a six pence, HOOOFFF ITTT!!! Don't get me wrong i think Spain are a highly talented team with a great skill for the technical side of football, abilities don't amount to anything if you think you have it in the bag. Well done USA, from going from the Ar*e end of the group to the Final in two matches. All good teams bounce back and i have no doubt Spain will. Just as long as Michael 'Sergio Ramos' Flatley doesn't wrap up the ball in gold paper and tie a nice bow on the top and say "Here, it's all yours" then look shocked afterwards.

  11. People are here, talking about how, both Brazil and Argentina will dominate at the next World Cup, has nobody taken any time to cast an eye, over their qualifying results, not the most assuring;
Brazil - Lost 2-0 to Paraguay, Drew 1-1 with Peru, 0-0 with Columbia & 0-0 with Bolivia
Argentina - Lost 6-1 to Bolivia, 2-1 to Columbia, 2-0 to Equador & drew 1-1 with Peru

The way the groups mapping out, it could see the Argies not even qualify. So people need to stop ranting and raving, about how good these South American teams really are and stop writing us English off. Not lost a game yet, maybe the opponents aren't up to the best of standards, but the Croats and Ukrainians, are still tough opposition and we've been consistant. And about the ideal partner issue for Wayne Rooney, well theres definately a better player than both Crouch and Heskey, and given his chances and if he was able to maintain his fitness, Dean Ashton, would be ideal.

  18. Moussa....England have a dirty working midfielder in Hargreaves, a good season from him is a welcome boost to United and England (he was Englands best player at last world cup).
England dodn't have a world class keeper, so what? Brazil in the past haven't had them but still won it and France had Barthez in net!
The major fact to look at is that a European team has NEVER won the world cup when it is held outside Europe. Put your smart money on Brazil.

  20. "YES, WE CAN." When you believe and work torwards your goal, yes you can. The Americans had belief in themselves and worked torwards their goal, the seemingly insurmountable Spanish hurdle was overcome. It was clear that the services of Iniesta and senna were immensely missed. In addition the prowess of the two Spanish stars, Torries and Villa, was diminished by their self-centred desire to outshine the other, probably they shopuld not have been played together. Yet you cannot anything from the Obama Boys, their displined and closely knit defence gave Spain little room to manouevre.
