British and Irish Lion Nathan Hines has received a one-week ban that rules him out of contention for the second Test against South Africa in Pretoria.
The Scotland forward was cited for a dangerous tackle on Emerging Springboks' lock Wilhelm Steenkamp during Tuesday night's drawn tour game at Newlands.
Hines was represented by Richard Smith QC, while Lions manager Gerald Davies and head coach Ian McGeechan were also present at a hearing in Cape Town on Wednesday.
Hines, who will be available for the third Test in Johannesburg on Saturday week, has 24 hours to appeal against the decision.
Judicial officer Alan Hudson, of Canada, found 58-times capped Hines to be in breach of law 10.4 after he was reported by New Zealand citing commissioner Steve Hinds.
Hines was thought to have an outside chance of being on the bench this Saturday, as the Lions look to fight back and level the series following a 26-21 defeat in Durban last weekend.

PEOPLE ARE GETTING OPRESSED ,KILLED AND SERIOUSLY HURT EVERYDAY IN OTHER PARTS OF YOUR COUNTRY AND ALL YOU LOT BLEAT ON ABOUT IS LOST GAMES AND WHAT YOUR GOING TO DO TO US. WHATEVER, IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WE WILL ALL BOARD A PLANE AND COME HOME. THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER 12 YEARS `TIL YOU CAN GET ALL WOUND UP AGAIN.
Why not let the rugby do the talking? Your dude got cited, so what, @#$% happens. The Lions have a good team and fought back well on Saturday. I for one am looking forward to this Saturday and will be at Ellis Park on the 4th. Good luck for the rest of the tour and my it be a 3 nil sweep from the Bokke.
Oh roll on Saturday till we shut these arrogant a.r.s.e.s up!
ITS ALL SINKING TO A FOOTBALL LEVEL ON HERE LADS, COME ON THE LIONS I WILL BACK YOU WHATEVER, AS FOR THE BOKES COMMENTS ON HERE, YOU SHOW YOUR TRUE COLOURS, YOU REALLY ARE VERY CHILD LIKE. SHAME YOU WERE BULLIED AS A KID WAS YOU,SOMETHING MUST HAVE HAPPENED TO YOU TO LEAVE YOU SO MENTALLY SCARRED. PITY THEM , THEY NEED IT. NEVER MIND ITS ONLY A GAME GET A LIFE.
I apologise to Chris, it was that idiot Marlo my diatribe was against. Still, he knew who I f''''ing meant.
post 30, stop crying you say. I can tell you I've never seen a man crying over a lost game of rugby. Unless, thats right In the Walkabout in Sheperds Bush, I remember now, England had just beaten the Springboks and prevented them from taking the 'most consecutive wins' record. My friends and I witnessed wholesale tears and I mean real tears it was pathetic. And we loved every f''''king minute of it. The more and more I see these arrogant posts I realise that as a sporting nation you are c''nts.
cited, heard and banned in one day?seems a bit cut and dried really, anywhere else and he would have waited around 2 weeks for a hearing date, dont the boks want to come up against mr hines?
As for the 99 call...lions dont stand a chance against a South African
Lions...losers!!! Get used to it and stop crying like little faggots!
whatever you gay puffs
And dont forget it was nice to see a ref that wasnt on theyre side on tuesday, lets see the arguements that causes because the idiots know its true
Honestly its like the S. Africans are invisnible. They are not, instead of focusing on theyre game we need to just concentrate on ourselves. We have an awesome amount of talented players so let them get out there and do there business. South africans think they are the best so lets just shut them up coz they are getting on my tit the arrogant idiots.
Lets just get on with it and deal with the fact that McGeechan picked the wrong squad for the tour from the start - too much political influence in the background and not enough rugby players with the right credentials to give the boks a hard time, which is frankly about abrasive, up front play with hard tackling and fast ball being the two key skills needed across the team.
The squad does not have enough of that, so the chances are we will lose the tour because once again the management of the tour fail to understand the nature of the opposition.
Never heards so much whinning from a bunch of lion grils. The citation was handed by a Canadian and not from SA. So stop crying and and start playing some rugby and see if the Lions have got it to beat the World Champs
Got to say, I think the attitude of the South Africans comments on this tour have been disgusting. Just shows how a bit of success can go to your head. Nice guys when they were loosing, now they have become idiots with their success. Pity but not unpredictable
If Hines committed a dangerous tackle then he got off lightly, if he had been English it would have been 3 matches, however the NZ offenders on BOD 2005 shouls have been banned for a minimum 6 months as that was the worst case of a spear tackle to this day.
absolutely ridiculous, where was this rule when Umaga and co. almost ended O'Driscoll's career?
U gave the game to the world, butcant take a bit of heat.COME ON BOKKE
LETS GET THE 99 CALL GOING.
WHAT ABOUT SOME OF THE TACKLES PUT IN ON LIONS IN PROVINCIAL GAMES. THIS IS SOME KIND OF SICK JOKE. EMERGING BOKS HAD TO DOUBLE UP ON HINES AT ONE POINT. NO CITATION THERE. STILL TAKE THE MEDICINE AND GET ON WITH IT. LETS GET ON AND HAMMER THESE FOLK INTO THE GROUND. SHOW THEM WHO GAVE THE GAME TO THE WORLD. MON THE LIONS.
