Scottish Premier League - Venus patient on signings

Eurosport - Thu, 25 Jun 15:01:00 2009

Celtic assistant manager Mark Venus will forego Champions League football this season in order to get the right players into the club.

The new Hoops' management team of Venus (pictured right), manager Tony Mowbray (left) and first-team coach Peter Grant are already preparing for their first Champions League qualifier on July 28 or 29, which comes before the SPL season begins on August 15.

He said: "Obviously we have lost a couple of players and we will be trying to bring players in. Who they are and where they are, I don't know. Personally, and this is me speaking, I don't care how long it takes to bring people into this football club."

Celtic will be without key man Shunsuke Nakamura who is to join Espanyol, and there are doubts over the futures of midfielder Paul Hartley and striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who are both out of contract.

Skipper Stephen McManus will miss the start of the season as he recovers from a knee injury and midfielder Scott Brown is a doubt with an ankle problem.

However, Venus, speaking to the media at Celtic's Lennoxtown training centre, claimed there will be no panic buying over the next few weeks.

He added: "If we have to miss the Champions League qualifier, the bottom line is, I'd like to think we will manage this football club for a lot of years and I'd like to think the players we are going to bring to this club are going to stay with us for a couple of years.

"So I would not want to panic into bringing in a footballer to do a job on the 27th of July when I might regret bringing him in for the next four years.

"We have to bring in the players who we think are right."

  12. Metz...here a question for you....last season ur team did win the double and fair play to them, however going forward as a neutral and taking into account all of the aspects that we have discussed recently...WHO SHOES WOULD YOU RATHER BE IN AT THE PRESENT MOMENT RANGERS OR CELTICS?

From Stuart, on Fri 26 Jun 2:28PM
  13. Metz....u cant gain it if ur not in it....and they will still be given time if they dont get there....What Allys and Kennys experience in the CL recently???

From Stuart, on Fri 26 Jun 2:24PM
  14. #206............why do you need experience metzybhoy wee strachan didnae have any european experience as a manager neither did martin "the messiah" oneill and they done alright wee gordy was the first manager in tae the last 16 two yrs running not just once like yous mob but twice so whats your point......you seem tae be commenting on all things celtic constantly is that coz theres nuhin comin oot the hunnery ae noo or are you a closet tim cmon metzybhoy get us told ya mad celtic fan ye

  16. Champs at what????? Surely if you were champs who would have some kind of recognition from the spl,in the form of say a title,or flag,or something??? Or are you champs back in your homeland???

From METZ, on Fri 26 Jun 2:13PM
  17. Metz...we are champs and we know that however it doesnt pay the bills m8......

From Stuart, on Fri 26 Jun 2:06PM
  18. Metz..Good that we agree partially, however....u need money now...u dont get the CL money till next year...all the past stuff is history...I am talking next season now cause the last ones finished....and I am going on what has been said by SDM , Bain And Wattie not a waiter....as for plenty oh Bears putting money in, tell them they can buy the club from Murray at any time...even Barbados Joe wants his cash back from Murray now along with the banks

From Stuart, on Fri 26 Jun 2:05PM
  19. 201 I agree in part with you,but you seem to be under the impression that this is the 1st time its happened at Ibrox,I can assure you its not,(season 82-83 I recall)& just like then we will bouncy bouncy back.Regardless of what you think,or what your being told by the waiters at Ibrox when you eat there,we are a HUGE WORLD CLUB,we will not allow our club to almost go to the wall they way your board did to you just a wee while ago, like I said b4 if it wasnt for wee fungus which team would you be following now????Yes we may have a debt issue, yes we may be lacking in a few postions currently, but at the end of the day we ars still the champs,we will get cash from C/L & believe me there are PLENTY of bears who,if asked would pump cash in2 the team we love,if only to keep septic in 2nd place

From METZ, on Fri 26 Jun 1:55PM
  20. Metz...my point is that injuries / suspensions will occur...u have CL footie to contend with...do u think that the squad is strong enough to cope....its great winning the league defending it is gonna be harder....If Boogie gets injured or Weir in the 1st 2-4 weeks who will cover Velicka...if any of the back 4 get injured who will cover for them....Rangers are down to the bones for the 1st 6-8 games and with the sale of the fringe players max 3 mill will be made, Rangers need 6 million to keep the banks happy before September 09, wheres that coming from....Celtic are in a slighty better position but not by much...we need to buy and I think we will
