Transfers - Your view: United losing allure?

Eurosport - Thu, 25 Jun 10:31:00 2009

Iker Casillas apparently has no intention of moving to Manchester United. Neither has Karim Benzema or Franck Ribery at this point in time.

Alex Ferguson, Rome, FOOTBALL - 0

Carlos Tevez didn't want to stay at Old Trafford and Cristiano Ronaldo found the lure of Real Madrid too great.

And few would argue that Lionel Messi would never consider moving to Manchester. Ditto Kaka.

Indeed, historically United have struggled to attract the best players in the world. They usually opt to go to Real, or Barcelona or one of the Italian giants.

Dimitar Berbatov may have cost £30m last summer, but can the Bulgarian really be counted as one of the best players in the world?

Ronaldo can certainly be included in that bracket, but he arrived at Old Trafford as nothing more than a youngster with a bright future. It was United who made him great. Likewise Wayne Rooney.

United are current Premier League champions, Champions League finalists and a club which boasts a rich and proud tradition, spanning back decades.

So why can't Alex Ferguson seem to attract the crème de la crème of world football?

He has £80m to spend this summer, yet at the moment, the only likely arrival is that of Wigan winger Antonio Valencia. Add in a few teenaged Brazilians and the formula is hardly going to set Reds fans' pulses racing.

Should United supporters be content with this?

Buying in promising youngsters has worked in the past, but should United be expected to be able to compete with other top European clubs in the battle to sign the biggest and best players?

Why can't they at the moment? Is it just a question of money? Or it the problem deeper set?

How old are you if your under 20 you will have never seen Liverpool win a league tittle. and why leave out the FA cup and oh yeah intercontinental and world club cup, Sure UTD fans don't get Liverpool fans fascination with things that happened in the last millennium.
UTD fan have won the last 3 EPL on the trot won the FA cup EPL and CL all in one season won the double several times and last season won the EPL world clup cup and League cup and made to the finals of the CL.
Yep we just don't get it.

  3. i completely agree with you Nigel A, as a man u fan i am not in the least bit worried either, yes, didnt want to lose players like tevez and ronaldo, but we have lost some other great players in the past and fergie has kept on building, creating and norishing talented fantastic individual players and this has won us trophies. This will keep on happening, because he knows what he is doing. I also look at the wonderful amount of talent left at Man U and i cant help but be positive for the future. Casillas, Benzema and Ribery doesnt want to join United?..... and?.. so what?

  5. It has more to do with Manchester rather than Manchester United!
Having lived in Cheshire I grew to like Manchester - it has its appeal -
but it isn't Madrid, Barcelona, Milan or even London.
Players often have families who have a say in where they live - this was
an obvious factor in Christiano Ronaldo's decision. Nemanja Vidic is
also reported to be less than enthralled by life in Manchester.
I believe that if SAF managed a club in one of the "glamorous" cities
he'd have absolutely no difficulty attracting any player he wanted.
The plain fact is SAF and Manchester United have done extremely
well in getting the players they've been able to bring to the club in past years.
As a fan of the club since 1958 my concern is for the post-SAF era which must
    eventually come!

  7. Manchester United are the top side in England at the moment and also for the past 18 years, they have been the biggest, best supported team for over 60 years, so they must be doing something right. I think the team next season will flourish without Ronaldo, they will bond more as a unit, more as a team. This is Manchester United, this Sir Alex Ferguson not some excited little upstarts, false pretenders like Liverpool and Rafael Benitez. Benathus by name, beneath us by nature. I thank you.

Of course not we shouldn't have even bought him. He is a waste of $ now we don't have Tevez because of this idiot.

  17. as a united fan im not the slightest bit worried ,fergie knows what hes doing there are plenty of players at united to break through so why buy plus now the whole of europe know united have 80million supposedly to spend the price of any player united are interested in goes through the roof . i think we need a forward to play up front with rooney and i hope we buy an out and out winger now ronaldo has gone, personally i thank him for his service to united im not to sure that he will do that well for madrid but he helped win many games for us so ronny all the best i think that the one player to benifit out of all of this will be rooney and i have a few quid on him being top scorer in the league next season i think as an out side bet owen to united on a free !

  18. MU fan like pauljudd6 simply have to brought up Liverpool or Rafa every time he post any comments. It's people like you that make people hate MU. Can't you just enjoy football? The answer to this article is YES.

    From c, on Thu 25 Jun 2:32PM
  19. All the more reason to nuture the english and mancunian talent that is in this country because I think the Premier Leadgue is seriously lacking passionate players and it doesn'y matter who you buy, you can't buy the spirit and desire to succeed that the english have. These foreign lads come here for money, they go to spain and Italy because of the history of their clubs and the weather.
Concentrate on the british players and the league will become physically stronger(no more divers)and us fans will support our team even more if footballers who come from a stones throw from the ground, not from half the world away who claim to love the club but leave when a so called better all round club want them(ronaldo comes to mind I think everyone will agree).
TREBLE FOR THE RED ARMY NEXT SEASON!
