Transfers - Your view: United losing allure?

Eurosport - Thu, 25 Jun 10:31:00 2009

Iker Casillas apparently has no intention of moving to Manchester United. Neither has Karim Benzema or Franck Ribery at this point in time.

Alex Ferguson, Rome, FOOTBALL - 0

Carlos Tevez didn't want to stay at Old Trafford and Cristiano Ronaldo found the lure of Real Madrid too great.

And few would argue that Lionel Messi would never consider moving to Manchester. Ditto Kaka.

Indeed, historically United have struggled to attract the best players in the world. They usually opt to go to Real, or Barcelona or one of the Italian giants.

Dimitar Berbatov may have cost £30m last summer, but can the Bulgarian really be counted as one of the best players in the world?

Ronaldo can certainly be included in that bracket, but he arrived at Old Trafford as nothing more than a youngster with a bright future. It was United who made him great. Likewise Wayne Rooney.

United are current Premier League champions, Champions League finalists and a club which boasts a rich and proud tradition, spanning back decades.

So why can't Alex Ferguson seem to attract the crème de la crème of world football?

He has £80m to spend this summer, yet at the moment, the only likely arrival is that of Wigan winger Antonio Valencia. Add in a few teenaged Brazilians and the formula is hardly going to set Reds fans' pulses racing.

Should United supporters be content with this?

Buying in promising youngsters has worked in the past, but should United be expected to be able to compete with other top European clubs in the battle to sign the biggest and best players?

Why can't they at the moment? Is it just a question of money? Or it the problem deeper set?

  1. 206.Well Manchester United are the top side in England at the moment and also for the past 18 years, they have been the biggest, best supported team for over 60 years, so they must be doing something right. I think the team next season will flourish without Ronaldo, they will bond more as a unit, more as a team. This is Manchester United, this Sir Alex Ferguson not some excited little upstarts, false pretenders like Liverpool and Rafael Benitez. Benathus by name, beneath us by nature.

  3. 3 2 Report abuse190.The Manchester United policy is club first, players second. Nobody is bigger than the club and that's the way it should be. If the likes of Benzema or Ribery want to stay on the continent, let them stay where they are. Any Football supporter will say the same thing - a player MUST want to be a part of the team and loyal to the club. If a player does not respect his club, team and supporters, the only question that should be asked is, "why is he at the club?" I'm sure Fergie will buy one or two players over the summer and they'll want to be a part of United...

  6. I agree that Man u struggle to attract big name players and preffer to create them rather than buy them.....in my opinion players continental players would rather play infront of 100 000 at the bearnabau in nice sunny weather in one of the most glamourous cities in the world... than freeze their nackers off in one of the rainiest places on earth where envious fans will boo and curse every time they touch or go near a ball....english football fans unlike their Rugby following counterparts can rarely appreciate the skills of an opposition player and wonder why they don't want to play in England, I respect players like Torres and Tevez as they play hard and fair, they have adopted the English attitude of players like Wayne Rooney and John Terry who don't fall over everytime a tackler comes within 5 yards of them.....where is Ronaldo's pride....if i were a player i would not want my opposite number to think he has hurt me...imagine a rugby player rolling around on the floor when he got ankle tapped.....stuff continental powder puff boys and breed more Rooneys

  9. Man United fans you need not worry even without Ronaldo and Tevez you still have a stronger squad than any other premiership side, Chelsea may not be far off the mark, liverpool not even worth considering as a threat, they seem to think they will win the title every year, the day it happens will be the day i believe it. Even with Chelsea's strong squad i think you still have a bit more in your tank.
So chin up guys you have won titles in the past after big players leaving and i have no doubt you will do it again ;o)

  12. United Is The Best Team Among The others.....
I agreed that United don't need a star.... Why?.... look Ronaldo, he join United from he's beginner at young ages.... We can see that youngster in Man United last season.... improve right.... So? Think again......

they have a strong squad even with tevez n ronaldo leaving..
with tevez n ronaldo gone.. at least we will b able 2 see rooney shine n he can play the position he likes..
tosic n nani can fill in ronaldo's place.. united make stars nt buy stars...
but i would love 2 see david silva and karim benzema in man utd..
they will b a good signing in my opinion..
n benzema will surely join man utd nt real..
