Sodje relishing family affair

Barnsley's latest signing Onome Sodje is dreaming of lining up opposite his uncle Akpo on the opening day of the season when the Tykes face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Onome, 20, became Simon Davey's first summer signing last week when he arrived from York and although he does not expect to walk straight into the manager's starting line-up, he has a huge incentive ahead of pre-season training.

Onome told the Sheffield Star: "It would be fantastic if I got to play against my uncle, but I've just got to get my head down and work as hard as I can to try to get in the team.

"It's going to be a really big jump for me coming from York City to playing for a Championship club, but of course the opening fixture is Sheffield Wednesday so there'll be people talking about by uncle.

"He has been great with me. I'm staying with him in Sheffield. It's been good to have his advice and he's told me to work hard and enjoy my football. He knows my ability and, like the rest of my family, he's been really supportive and told me to believe in my ability."

As well as Akpo and Onome, three other brothers play professional football. Sam was on loan at Leeds from Reading last season and is considering a permanent move to Elland Road, Efe is currently at Bury and Steve turns out for Ashford Town.
