Venus wants to play the beautiful game

Mark Venus wants to increase the overall standard of Scottish football by making a success of his time at Celtic.

The Hoops' assistant manager arrived with boss Tony Mowbray from West Brom last week to begin a new era in the east end of Glasgow following the departure of Gordon Strachan at the end of the season.

"It's a challenge in that we are trying to raise Scottish football as well as Celtic," he said.

"In the overall picture, we want Scotland to do better as a football nation.

"And if we can raise the bar with Celtic then other teams can get pushed up behind us. I have followed football for 30 years so I understand that it is a big football club.

"But like any football team, you want to improve it.

"We will have a look when we get back in July and see if we can put things in to place.

"Above all else, I hope the fans will see a team who plays football, who tries to attack and who has individuals who can make enjoyable watching."

Before the SPL season begins on August 15, Celtic have the first of possibly two tricky Champions League qualifiers ahead of them, with the initial game coming on 28/29 July.

Celtic will be without key man Shunsuke Nakamura who is to join Espanyol, and there are doubts over the futures of midfielder Paul Hartley and striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who are both out of contract.
