Murray scolds mum for 'Deliciano' antics

Sat, 25 Jun 19:27:00 2011

Andy Murray has told his mum to stop embarrassing him by calling rival Feliciano Lopez 'Deliciano'.

- 0

Spanish heartthrob Lopez, 28, is one of the more popular players with female tennis fans, leading Judy Murray to give him the nickname on Twitter.

The Scot, known as much for his dour demeanour as his strong defensive game, was not amused.

"I think it's about time she stopped that nonsense. Makes me want to throw up. It's disgusting," said Murray, who could meet Lopez in the quarter-finals.

"I was practicing with him before the tournament and my mum was on the side. I shouted across the net, I said, 'Feli, if we sit down for a drink, could you take a picture with my mum, because she thinks you're beautiful?'

"She went bright red. Refused to take the picture. Quite funny. Not like her."

  1. "everyone knows that England is the devil."

    Really?
I'm hoping then, that you've not taken advantage of living in a country of which you think so little?

Everyone with any sense of perspective and balance knows that England, like many European countries has brought a great deal that's good to the world as well as a great deal that's not.

The idea that Murray has issues on the court due to being under the yoke of his "English oppressors," is laughable.
The people of Scotland are free to choose to be "independent," at any time, which may well happen in the very near future, that is, if, they don't believe in a United Kingdom.
Scotland has been sending representatives to the U.K. parliament for many a year and some of our best known politicians and indeed leaders have come from both Scotland and Wales..

I'm not sure where there's any "oppression," in all of that..

As for Murray, I consider him to be British, as I do anyone who's born here in the U.K. or who chooses to be a British citizen. regardless of their "roots."
If he, or Scotland wish to be "free," I'd wish them well and totally support their decicions...should it happen, I'm pretty sure England wouldn't be sending troops over the border in order to quell the "uprising."
We could leave that sort of thing to people in countries and our own who have very skewed notions of "evil," or the "devil."

  2. Some of the posts on this article, particularly the vile hatred people recreationally spout, really help explain why it is so difficult for any Brits to win Grand Slams. I wonder if any other countries treat their athletes with such disdain. It is almost expected in the UK each time we have a potential sporting champion these days. Seems to be a real ingrained class thing going on here about loving a trier and gallant loser but finding distasteful anyone who displays enthusiasm for winning. Do we secretly hanker for a return to the amateur era with the joy just being in the taking part and the rest of the world just understanding they are facing Brits who invented these games...?

Farooq is very wise and most informed , everyone knows that England is the devil .This Murray would move better around the court i think without the chains of his English masters to oppress him.

  5. farouq, you are a fool. Firstly it's not the English crown, it was merged when James the 6th of Scotland also became James the 1st of England. Our Queen is Her Britannic Majesty, the Queen of England title is one of very many titles she holds, but far from the only one. Secondly, America did bow to our Crown for many years prior to The War of Independence, so the "never have" is also factually inaccurate. Your next inaccuracy is the use of, and spelling of "capitals". The CapitOl is in Washington DC, London is the capitAl city of the UK, capital letters also seem to be an issue for you. Generally speaking they are used for names, so "mr. murray" becomes "Mr Murray" and at the beginning of sentences, since your ludicrous little post isn't an email address. As to the tyrany of the evil imperialists that are our Royal family... well you're a little out of date my friend. These days they are a constitutional monarchy who rubber stamp acts of parliament and carry out ceremonial duties as required, and save us the expense and bother of having an elected Head of State. Not entirely modern or ideal, but then the alternatives aren't so great either. As to "scotch", it's a drink! Scottish people are "Scots", and any true one will refuse to answer to scotch and would likely as not teach you a bit about the use of the word "skirt" to describe their kilts. An item of traditional dress worn by very few Scots on a regular basis. Basically, judging by your own name, you're making a childish and irrelevant political point demonstrating your ignorant anti Englishness and are hoping to rally a bit of support from the very few genuinely anti English Scots. Learn a lesson matey, when the chips are down, all us Brits pull together and together we're pretty invincible. Now go and draw a picture of mummy and daddy and try and keep your colouring inside the lines like a good boy.

mr murray has once again betrayed his national identity , falling to his knees in front of the imperialistic tyranical english crown .bowing to the english monarchy in their capitol city . i say to the scotch folks who are treated as mere inferior peasants in their own country and subjugated by the arrogant engl;ish , are you going to stand up like men and prevail against this evil or are you going to wear skirts and act like women for eternity . the english laugh at you and like murray you are jellyfish with no backbone .what a sickening display from murray at the end . america never bowed to the english aristocracy and never will .

  9. Well said, james_nicholls. You are the voice of reason that stands out in sea of stupidity and xenophobia. Oh, and some really vile sexism. I think you're right that what was said was basically a dead pan joke and really didn't warrant all the bile we've seen here. Even a joke someone posted about "Come on Tim" was greeted with xenophobic venom. Andy Murray might not be the most likable player on the tour but even when he tries to make a joke some people seem to suffer a sense of humour loss and some of the ridiculous and moronic remarks on this thread are the result. Personally I'd love to see Andy Murray win and he can win it for Scotland if that is so important to him and his fellow Scots. But it won't affect my life one iota because it's just a sport. There are many more important issues to concern us than the nationality of a tennis player.

  10. continued... considered patronizing, so we're damned if we do and if we don't. As I say, it's an individual sport and people should support the player not his flag. I personally like Murray, he's a mirserable git, which is probably why!

  11. Is this a story that's worth this amount of xenophobia and ire? His Mum has made a fairly obvious but no doubt amusing to her pun on a handsome guys name. Her nororiously dour son is possibly underwhelemed, possibly was joking in a dead pan manner and the reporter missed the joke, either way, hardly important. As to AM's nationality... there's no legal dispute, he's British and his country of birth is Scotland.. Some sports seem to avoid this nonsense. For example golf has no problem with putting a players nationality down as their country of birth, Rory McIllroy was recently heralded as the second successive Northern Irish winner of the US Open in most press without suddenly becoming "British" upon victory. There's a tendency for the smaller home nations to be sensitive. If on Sunday AM lifts the championship at Wimbledom, I'm willing to bet that the commentry talks about his Scottishness, and his links with the Dunblane tragedy and so on and so forth... but the first mention of him being the first Briton in seventy odd years will have the bloggers, posters and callers clogging up all networks moaning about how he's suddenly a Brit now he's won. So let's get this straight. AM has upset English people, who will make up the majority of the crowd at Wimbledom for obvious reasons, by making unwise comments in the past. However, before you get all hot under the collar about "anti-Scottishness".. remember this, if there were five Scots guys in the world top twenty, and AM was one, and there was a big world event taking place this week in Edinburgh... the majority of the crowd would support somebody other than AM, because he simply doesn't have a winning personality and is single minded enough to not really care too much about changing it. So don't make assumptions about the English hating Scots, it's an individual sport and other guys are preferred. England supporting the "plucky jock" would be

  12. I am not surprised at all this anti scot stuff. the LTA spend millions in england to get a decent tennis player, and out of the backwoods comes a kid who learned in a court in dunblane and his mum had the sense to whip him off to SPAIN the min it was obvious he had talent..well done mum!. and another thing that pisses the english off is the top lady is also a scot.! where do all these millions go??. why cant a nation of 65million produce any class players. T. henman was a great player, flew the flag for the brits for many years. rusedski also did this although he was canadian. these idiots that pick tiny details about murray (hair, needs a shave..temper..rude..must smile more..arrogant??...dear me! how desperate are you to make fools of yourselves!. for a small nation of only 5million people we hold our end up in the world of sport, why dont you give all these asians and blacks a chance to get into tennis, most of your other sports rely on them, the future is black for england..spend some money on them.

Did he win as many tennis comps as murray ?? eh no. so why when something good is happenin for british tennis do we still have these anti scottish idiots talking absolute rubbish again!!

yes he is scottish and proud of it but he is also british too which is unusual as most scots , irish , welsh and funnily enough some english dont even class themselves as british anymore!!

its ironic if he wins he will be called a british champion but if he loses they will say he was a scottish player .......

he is the only brit player that has any hope of winning wimbledon for the next 10 years , i dont see any top english tennis players coming through the ranks that are as good , do you !!! i rest my case :)
