Alonso set to hold Liverpool talks

Fri 25 Jul, 02:00 PM

Xabi Alonso is set to hold talks with Rafa Benitez over his future at Liverpool, while Alvaro Arbeloa could reportedly be set to leave Anfield.Benitez hoped to sell the Spanish midfielder to fund his move for Gareth Barry, but interest has cooled significantly since Juventus chose to sign Christian Poulsen from Sevilla, rather than hold out for Alonso.

Alonso returned to training at Melwood on Friday after his extended post-Euro 2008 holiday, and the Liverpool Post claims he wishes to clarify his Anfield future.

The Spaniard has said in the past that he would be happy to stay at Liverpool, but Benitez needs to sell in order to raise the required cash for not only Barry, but Robbie Keane as well.

Speculation increased that the Keane transfer is a step closer to completion after he was left out of a Spurs pre-season friendly in Spain by Juande Ramos.

Meanwhile, the Post claims Arbeloa wants to leave Liverpool.

The full-back reportedly would like to return to Spain for personal reasons, and while Liverpool would probably have no problems finding a buyer, that move could also impact the Barry transfer.

Despite claiming he would settle for no less than £18million, Martin O'Neill is thought to be willing to accept a slightly lower fee plus Steve Finnan in exchange for Barry.

However, if Arbeloa is also sold, that would leave new signing Philip Degen as the only specialist right-back at Anfield.

  2. If a player wishes to leave then let him go, A liverpool player should want to die for the club and be prepared to give his all for the fans. As for barry, yes buy him but not at 18 million. as for being a shortage of a righty full back then look no further than the reserves we have seen preseason like stephen darby , the guys got class.

  4. Are liverpool really that short of cash, rafa has waisted alot of cash the last couple of years, personally arbeloa to stay, this could be his season, keane would be a very good buy, but it needs to be a the right price, £20 million theres alot better out there for that money, id keep alonso, and and definately get Barry but once again you cant be paying £18 million for him he really aint worth it, lets just hope once the season starts the squad can work together andd maybe if were really lucky start winning some silverware and do us proud.

  8. 15 million for barry laughable, 4 good performances for england around top class players should be easy lampard has managed it for years at chelsea, alonso far better, would not let finnan go either , i like keane but will probably have to pay silly money for him, kuyt will have a good season as will babel would like to see him used as a striker , get rid of voronin biggest liverpool flop since torben pieknik

  9. as a lfc fan i hope arbeloa decides to stay because nobody knows how degan is going to fair on his first season but in saying that there is no point in keeping arbeloa if he wishes to go if he decides to go i would like to wish him well in the future.

  10. I didn't like Arbeloa at first, but he has impressed at times and became better all the time. He's not as good as Evra or A. Cole, but he should stay. I also hope that Alonso stays; I doubt that Barry will be better than Alonso in a red shirt (15 million is the absolute max I'd pay for Barry anyway). Keane will be a good addition, but I thought someone like Fabregas or Makelele (only younger!) would be the kind of layer Liverpool needs (apart from wingers). We'll see what happens, as I trust Rafa, I know it will be good, yet whether it will be good enough, we'll know in less than a year from now...

  11. I agree with Chris, Its all "ifs & buts".
I like Arbeloa, and would like him to stay, we're gonna need him this season. But if a player wants to go, let him go.
I like Barry. but £18million is way to much to ask for him, £15million is much more reasonable.
