Jarvis Hoping For Ascot Applause

Fri 25 Jul, 02:09 PM

Alan Jarvis is banking on Sweet Applause to enhance his enviable record in Saturday's Princess Margaret Independent Newspaper Stakes at Ascot.

The Twyford handler sent out River Belle to take the Group Three prize in 2003 while Mixed Blessing was on the mark two years later.

Sweet Applause is Jarvis' contender this time around but after finishing a creditable eighth in the Queen Mary at the Royal meeting, she subsequently disappointed when odds-on at Ripon.

"She ran a great race in the Queen Mary and we were really pleased with her," said Jarvis.

"I made a mistake in taking her to Ripon last time. The ground was very heavy and I really should have pulled her out.

"I'd have preferred a lower draw but you've got to do the best with what you've got. She was drawn 17 last time and still managed to run a good race.

"She's a nice relaxed filly and I think she'll run a big race. It's been a lucky race for me."

Sweet Applause is one of 16 contenders in the six-furlong heat after Aunt Nicola was declared a doubtful runner on Friday.

The Chris Wall-trained Pyrrah won her maiden in fine style last time and makes the step up to Group company here.

"She's a progressive filly. It's a big step up from a maiden to a Group Three but we're anxious to find out how good she really is and we'll find out at Ascot," said Wall.

"The runner-up in her maiden was an impressive winner on Thursday and that franks the form but we shouldn't get too excited with collateral form.

"She had to cope with quickish ground at Newbury and it looks like it will be quick again.

"She's a big filly and the conditions might not be ideal but she's in great shape and we're hopeful of a good run."
