Mailbox: In Defence Of Canyon

If you have a contribution to make (maybe you want to predict what the Ballydoyle tactics will be), drop us a line at editorial@sportinglife.com

Canyon meets requirements

The Canyon is still a maiden?Who set the entry requirements? If eligible and entered he has a right to run. Nobody expects a maiden to win so no big deal.

Andrew O'Donnell

Pacemakers add to race

More often than not when a pacemaker runs the truer a test it is due to an even pace, this makes it more likely that the best horse will win rather than the unpredictability of a tactical race and in a championship race like this do we not want to see the best horse to win and no excuses in behind. I'll all for a satisfactory result and after all, we know what canyon is in for so betting wise it won't be touched.

Canyon Not Welcome

What business does a 12 time maiden (Red Rock Canyon) have running in a group 1 race when the stable is represented by 2 other chances, including the odds on favourite. Everyone know what is going on and that the horse will not be ridden to give it the best chance of winning. It is not within the legal bounds of racing within the UK.

Charles Ramsay

Lucarno is versatile

Lucarno doesn't have to make it though Charles... he came from behind at York and Doncaster last term.

Steve Miller

No easy lead for Lucarno

I think there must be a good chance that the Ballydoyle pacemakers will harry Lucarno for a lead ruining his chances and setting it up for Duke of Marmalade.

Duke Of Marmalade no odds-on shot

I'm a big supporter of Duke Of Marmalade, but he is no odds-on shot for this. Without being too unkind,Youmzain is a bit of a yardstick horse, but did well enough last time. I get the feeling that there is more to come from Lucarno and Papal Bull shows flashes of brilliance but is a difficult ride, but is probably preferred over Ask. Macarthur has a solid look about him but it would be a bit disappointing if he was capable of winning.

I'm thinking it will come down to Duke Of Marmalade and Lucarno. The latter will outstay the former, so how the race is run will be crucial. Papal Bull and Youmzain shouldn't be far away, but I get the feeling Youmzain had his chance last year.

Reverse forecast: Lucarno/Duke Of Marmalade

On Montjeu's King George: I've not seen such an imperious victory in a Group 1 event (let alone the King George) since the mid-1960s when witnessing Sea-Bird's Derby and Arc.

Steve Miller

Generous Simply The Best

I remember the way Generous routed a very good field back in 1991, he destroyed the Derby field and duly obliged in the King George, amazing performance.

Golden Memories Of Charter

Great memories of Time Charter winning in 1983 - was my biggest bet + win at that time. Was too nervous to watch the BBC coverage in the bookies so legged it down the High St to Debenhams - ran into the shop but was slightly hampered by the melee of shoppers swerving to dodge the heavily made-up lady from the perfume department standing in the aisle trying to spray them with cologne - luckily a gap opened up and I shot up the escalators to the TV department.

Turned the sound up on one of them and watched intently until Peter O'Sullevan said: '...Time Charter beginning to get up...' - I let out a big roar as she crossed the line infront of Diamond Shoal and Sun Princess. Job done, I turned round to find a small but slightly bemused crowd of shoppers looking at me - I confused them even more by saying 'I've just won a monkey!' - I just strolled off slightly embarrassed but very happy.

Bull To Chase Duke Home

Is Duke of Marmalade going to stay ???

Why would Aiden O'Brien run the Duke when he has a proved 1.5 mile Goup 1 winner, (Soldier of Fortune), not in the field.?

Why would they have 2 other horses in the race, except to ensure that there is a "suitable" pace for their main hope.

If they slow it up and LUCARNO, (or something else) goes on, they are sitting targets, (surely the quality of jockeys riding in this race will not allow Jimmy Fortune to "steal a march" on then again).

YOUMZAIN is a dangerous challenger, but need to be help up as late as possible & Richard Hughes is Very good at that, (if not arguably sometimes at little too late!!)

PAPUL BULL is not proven at Group 1 level, although it been well reported that this has been the horses target all year, and Sir Michael Stoute is a master at getting one ready for the big day. However, is the fact that Ryan Moore has opted to ride ASK meaningful? What about the replacement Jockey, (O.Peslier), surley in many peoples list of top Jockeys, and a proven winner of Group 1's all over the world (Including Ascot), so not worries there. The horse has the dreaded timeform "squiggle" but if Mr Pellier can get a "tune out of him" he will go very close .

It seems to me Jockey tactics will be the key to the race. (Remember Ryan Moore is the Eclipse last year)

Who Knows

Not me, but if Aiden O'Brien, Johnny Murtagh , and more importantly THEIR bosses, (Who Know a thing or two about breading!!!), think the Duke will stay, I am certainly NOT going to argue against them. !!!!

Is Duke of Marmalade value @ odds on - NO

Will he win - Probably.

What will I back - Reverse forecast Duke of Marmalade / Papul Bull

Lammtarra Gets The Job Done!

There have been many great races over the years and I have been lucky enough to witness most of them!

The two that stick in my mind were Swain, who on the day was completely unfancied due to the firm going, only for the heavens to open and turn the track in to a bog within the space of an hour, and in turn, Swain produced a magnificent turn of foot.

The other was Lammtarra, who I feel has never been given the recognition he deserved, he poleaxed Pentire that day and went on to add the Arc. A truly great horse who always got the job done!

Grundy v Bustino - but at what cost?

Who, if old enough, could ever forget Grundy beating Bustino? I always held the view that, asking a horse for maximum effort, as in this race, had a debilitating effect in their future stud career. It happened to Brigadier Gerard also in this race, when racing over a distance too far for his stamina and in (heavy) ground he hated, he seemingly never recovered and was, unfortunately, a failure at stud.

Two Golden Days

My two outstanding memories are of Shergar's awesome display in 1981, beating Master Willie and Light Cavalry as if they were nothing.

Shergar was trapped in against the rails for a few strides and looked as if he might not get out but when the gap appeared he was brave enough to take it and accelerate away for a wonderful win. Will always remember the close up TV shots of 19 year old Walter Swinburn and Shergar's tongue lolling out. Hard to believe it was his last victory as anything seemed possible in the aftermath

Other memory was Teenoso's amazing win under Lester Piggott in 1984.

Regarded at the time as a sub-standard Derby winner, he fully vindicated the decision to keep him in training with a memorable all the way win on ground he hated. He beat some outstanding horses in an exceptionally strong renewal, including Tolomeo, Sadlers Wells, Sun Princess and Time Charter.

Pentire Sets Pulse Racing

Can't recall the year may have been 1995 or 1996, but it was the year that Pentire won, I used to love the way that Michael Hills delivered him late, lobbing along on the bit.

He lost a good 5 lengths at the start when he was slow to leave the stalls, and I thought my money had gone west, but the 100/30 shot came flying through at the end, happy days....

I backed him for The Arc too, and i actually went that year, so perhaps it was 1996, but nothing could touch that monster Hellisio!

Azamour Sparkles For Kinane

Azamour with Mick Kinane at Newbury for me. He came from last to first, brilliant and I'd backed him!

Elizabeth Tregurtha

Another Azamour Fan

I remember John Oxx having 2 great horse, Azamour and Alamshar, I know one of them won in 2003 but which one was it? I think Alamshar.

It was a great race, I love those Aga Khan colours.

James Berkery

Cacoethes So Close

Nashwan and Cacoethes was a hell of a battle. Had backed Cacoethes at Epsom so at least I found out he was good after all. As for Saturday, Macarthur to take the honours for Ballydoyle. Go Seamie!
