ATP Tour - Murray sets up Djokovic quarter-final

Eurosport - Fri, 25 Jul 12:05:00 2008

Andy Murray defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2 0-6 6-4 to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final with Novak Djokovic at the Toronto Masters.

TENNIS; Andy Murray, July 2008 - 0

Second seed Rafael Nadal also earned his place in the last eight with a comfortable straight sets win over Russia's Igor Andreev, but former Toronto champion Andy Roddick was knocked out after losing in three sets to Croatia's Marin Cilic.

British number one Murray started his match against Wawrinka superbly, blowing away the Swiss with a confident display of shot-making to race away with the opening set.

Despite suffering from a knee injury that required treatment, Warwinka responded to take the second set to love against a strangely subdued Murray.

The final set was a tense affair, but Murray found the break at 3-3 and held his serve at 5-4 to claim victory.

"The good thing about obviously being a set up," Murray said afterwards, "is even if you lose the second, it just goes into a one set shootout; whereas if you lose the first set you're basically back to square one again.

"So that kind of leveled the match up a bit. I knew I was going to have to stay tough early in the third. You just got to keep telling yourself, even though you're not hitting the ball well, to look for some big first serves and make a lot balls and hope he misses a lot balls, which happened in the middle of the third set."

There was bad news for Murray in the doubles competition though, as he and his brother Jamie lost 7-6 6-4 to second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in their second round match.

Defending champion Djokovic enjoyed a 6-4 6-4 win over Sweden's Robin Soderling.

"I played the best tennis of my career in the first six months of the year," said Australian Open champion Djokovic.

"I just want to care and keep my focus about my career. If I continue going forward the same way, the results will come."

France's Gilles Simon followed his shock defeat of Roger Federer by clinching his eighth victory in a row against Jose Acasuso.

The world number 22, who lifted the Indianapolis title four days ago, defeated Argentine Acasuso 6-3 6-4.

Simon will now face Cilic in the quarters, after the Croatian conjured a shock of his own by knocking former champion Roddick out of the tournament 6-4 4-6 6-4.

American Roddick appeared baffled by the hard-hitting Cilic, but after dropping the opening set broke at 5-4 to take the second. However, Roddick's momentum stalled in the third and Cilic took control.

Roddick became increasingly frustrated as the match slipped away, smashing his racket and spending parts of the set arguing with the chair umpire.

"Something doesn't feel comfortable," Roddick, playing only his seventh match since injuring his back at the Rome Masters in early May, said afterwards.

"It's a little bit across the board. My forehand is just not doing anything. I'm missing it and that's the one that I need to click right now."

Nadal eased into the quarter-finals by overcoming the plucky Andreev 6-2 7-6 to improve his unbeaten streak to 26 matches.

"I play a very good match, 100 per cent better than yesterday," Nadal said. "I was a little bit worried about the second set because Federer happened the same yesterday."

In another upset, German Nicolas Kiefer toppled fourth-seeded Russian Nikolai Davydenko 4-6 6-4 6-4 while Frenchman Richard Gasquet got the better of Spain's David Ferrer for the first time in four career meetings, winning 6-3 6-3.

James Blake, the last remaining American in the tournament, moved on with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 win over Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

  1. Ah Will, you're a darling, tis Celtic passion for sure. Andy has years ahead of him, verve and drive. Who knows? I have a feeling about him, I think he will refine his skills and fulfill his potential, hopefully going on to kick some serious arse. Federer and Nadal (among others) are wonderful sportsmen and a joy to watch, each has fully deserved every win and I salute them. Andy will get his limelite I believe.

  2. finally managed to see some tennis!!! i'm fuming because the only tv channel in romania that i get and broadcasts Toronto has had more important news to focus on (like who cares what jerseys steaua have this season?!?!?) so they only aired one match. makes me wish i had tennis tv.
anyways, back to the match, then. i was glad to see nadal improve his game. it was definitely more solid than in the first match and the second set was a delight, partly thanks to andreev who put on a wonderful display of his tennis skills with many spectacular points won from all over the court by both players (i even wrote down at what score, but looking at it now, it seems a bit nerdy so i won't bother you with such details :-p).
that being said, i think that, even if nadal's game may not be the best on the surface, his attitude sure is. case in point, an "out" ball from andreev early in the first set during a rally, which the line umpires didn't call. rather than stop the game and demand a challenge, nadal kept the ball rolling and won it.
i like andreev's game very much, his surge in the second set was great to watch. the last two games were thrilling. too bad andreev lost steam in the tiebreak. nadal however was clinical, FOCUSED, on target. hope he stays that way for the duration of the tournament.
i'm upset i couldn't see the roddick-cillic match. i would have loved to see how the unseeded player overcame roddick's monster serve.
oh, well, c'est la vie, c'est la guerre, c'est la misere.
    take care!

  3. Don't know Madaajbre. There have been a lot of "surprises", maybe due to the fact that more players enter the equation on this surface than on others. Simon is looking good. . Kiefer surprised me by beating Davydenko (who I thought was a candidate for the title). I saw some of Cilic against Roddick and was impressed with his serving, volleying and ground strokes. The only thing I thought was that he didn't move so well, though that could be an optical illusion given that he such a big guy. The other half of the draw features the remaining big guns.I still think Nadal is playing a bit too far behind the baseline, but he's been very workmanlike in resolving his matches and as the tournament goes on, he'll probably try to be a bit more aggressive. He may have to be if he meets the best version of Gasquet. I've posted comments about Murray and Djokovic below. If you really twisted my arm, I'd go for Djokovic. With my record for predictions, he probably would be horrified to hear that I'd gone for him (it's been the kiss of death for more than a few players). In any case, the beauty of this is the unpredictability. All the guys in the quarters are there because they're playing well. I haven't mentioned Blake thus far, so he's probably going to win. If so, my impression is that it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. It promises to be interesting. CHEERS

  12. Very good win for Andy. Wawrinka is perhaps the most improved player on the pro circuit and has a similar ranking to Murray. Didn't see the match so I can't make specific comments on how it went. Now Andy will be second favourite against Djokovic, who has despatched him easily (often very easily) in all their previous meetings. To have a chance, I think Andy obviously has to serve well and then play to a good length, with pace off the ground. Once Djokovic gets inside the court to hit ground strokes (particularly forehands), he's absolutely lethal (perhaps the best in the world right now on this surface). Novak pounces on short balls, weak service returns etc and once he lines up that forehand from inside the court, it's almost impossible to read where he's going to put it. Perhaps the only area where Andy may be slightly better than Novak is at the net, where I feel he has more touch (it's perhaps one of the very few slight weaknesses that Djokovic has).I'm not sure if going to the net will form part of his game plan, but it's possible. It's one way of trying to put Novak under pressure (difficult to do off the ground)but obviously has its own risks. Andy is an excellent player, top ten in the world so he's got a chance. Having said that, he up against a class act here. Djokovic is a real Rolls Royce of a player and Murray will have to be at his very best to put him under pressure. Definitely a match worth catching IMO. Great win for the mecurial Richard Gasquet against his bogey man David Ferrer. Very interesting match up with Nadal now. Four years ago, people talked about these two in the same breath (briefly!) but one has gone on to great things, while the other has underachieved. Caught the end of the Nadal match. Andreev had him under pressure but in the final two games and the tiebreak, Rafa didn't make a single unforced error. Good day at the office for another class act. CHEERS
