England manager Fabio Capello has announced he will retire after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, two years before his contract expires.
Asked by La Repubblica newspaper to confirm that he would no longer coach after the World Cup, Capello replied: "This is certain."
The comment came after he ruled out a possible return to Italy as coach of the national team.
"My shift ends with England," he added. "My work on the field ends with the English experience."
He added that he would like to end his career by taking England to "among the top three in the world" in South Africa.
The 62-year-old, however, complained about the amount of talent at his disposal.
"I'm worse off than (Italy coach Marcello) Lippi," he said.
"In the Premier League only 35 percent of the players are English, while in Italy it is around 72 percent."
He also said that Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard should stay at the club amid talk of a possible move to Serie A champions Internazionale.
"As England coach I would prefer it if Lampard remained in England. He would have less traveling to do that way," Capello said.

* Born 18 June, 1946 in Pieris (San Canzian d'Isonzo), Italy
COACHING CAREER:
* After Arrigo Sacchi left AC Milan in 1991, former Italian international Capello took charge and won the 1992 title with Milan, who remained unbeaten throughout the campaign -- a record which still stands.
* Milan won four league titles and the 1994 European Cup under Capello. He left the club in 1996 and moved to Real Madrid for the 1996-97 season where he won the Spanish title before returning to Milan for a short unsuccessful stint.
* He joined AS Roma in 1999 and, with a team built around Francesco Totti, led them to their first championship in 18 years in 2000-01.
* In 2004 he signed a three-year contract with Juventus and won the 2004-05 league title in his first season in charge, retaining it the following season before the explosion of a match-fixing scandal which eventually led to the club being stripped of the honours.
* He resigned as coach of Juventus on July 4, 2006 and was named as Real Madrid coach the following day.
* He spent millions on new players but his Real team failed to live up to expectations in the first half of last season.
* In the second half of the campaign he brought David Beckham back into the team after sidelining him over his move to LA Galaxy. A strong run-in then allowed Real to overhaul arch-rivals Barcelona and take the league title.
* Capello was still sacked though on June 28 with Real bosses saying his team had failed to play exciting football. Capello became an Italian television pundit.
* He was appointed England manager on December 14 2007, signing a four-year contract. His predecessor Steve McClaren was sacked after failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

He also won back-to-back league titles with Juventus in 2005 and 2006, but the club was stripped of these honours in the wake of the Italian match-fixing scandal.
European Cup with AC Milan in 1994
European Super Cup with AC Milan 1994
Four Italian Super Cups.
PLAYING CAREER:
Won 32 caps for Italy between 1972 and 1976, scoring eight goals including the only goal in Italy's first win against England at Wembley in 1973.
Started his career with SPAL in 1964 before moving to AS Roma in 1967 and clinching the 1969 Italian Cup. He soon joined up with Juventus where he enjoyed his best spell, winning league titles in 1972, 73 and 75.
Capello signed for AC Milan in 1976, picking up the 1979 scudetto before retiring.

HES SO VERY TURE,thats been our biggest problem, and all in football know this,
HA AFTER THE CUP,WITH OUR NEWSPAPERS THE GUY WILL BE HOUNDED OUT JUST LIKE ALL BEFORE HIM
He's clearly been misquoted, everyone stop talking @#$% pleaseeeee, at no point in the article is there a quote from Capello clearly stating that he will quit in 2010. Apparently the question was posed but we don't know how the question was phrased...he says that England is his last job and that's all.
It was probably an interview conducted by the Scandinavian England supporters group and they couldn't understand his accent - ''a feather has become 35 hens''
We are guilty in this country, particularly the media, for jumping on the backs of our players and managers. No one has been more critical than me of Frank Lampard and of Sven when he was in charge. But look at the treatment Hargreaves got in the last world cup, he was booed by England fans and in the end he showed the most passion and the most bottle. Capello said this will be his last job, Im sure he will want to go out on a high. why don’t we get behind him and the team for a change instead of piling on the pressure as usual.

at least we know whats gonna happen now so maybe the fa can get off their backsides and train an english man to do the job that cappelos doin
Ian L, u have no clue what ur talking about. r u trying to say that english long ball is exciting. it is neither exciting nor efficient. if english soccer was any good they wouldn't have apointed a foreign coach, u don't see that happen in italy. what about the wc 2006, where was england there. oh yea and what about the euro 2008. don't talk english soccer overall is @#$%. u have the best manager in the world, u should be lucky to have that
Wow all u Capello haters dont even know the reason why he is stopping after the World Cup. I think of it like this, England invented the sport, England has the best league in the world with the best players, even though most of EPL players arent english, the whole England international first team can play for any of the Best Clubs in the World no problem. On paper England's first team is the Best in the world, some teams may have better players but as a whole the England team is World Class (except maybe France). Capello is thinking " If i cant Win the World Cup or come close with this current England team and it probably will be the best chance England have had for years then I might aswell retire". ANd if he comes top 3 in the next World Cup everyone will love him and he can retire proud of his achievements and maybe start a new legacy for the ENgland team.
Fabio L, are you an Italian claiming English league football is boring!? Ha ha ha! I've never been bored more consistently by league matches than with games from Serie A. Horrible, boring teams who can't shake off the post-war defensive mentality and that goes for your national team too!
I'd also be very surprised if this isn't a dodgy story, I can't imagine Capello saying at this stage that he will leave his contract early.
Who cares we all know England have no chance winning the world cup, all we are good at is darts.
Proof that Capello is only here for the money! He has hardly started with England and announces that he is quitting TWO years before his contract expires. Sack him now without paying him a penny, and for pity's sake, give the England manager's job to someone who cares and is committed to the cause. As for the lack of English players in our league, I thought we all knew about that problem and our wonderful new manager was going to do something masterful that no other man was unable to do since 1966. Get on with your job and stop moaning. Our local Tesco's manager appears to have more planning and awareness than Capello. Am I wrong to want England to actually WIN the World Cup? It looks like I should be thrilled if England make the top three, wow!!!
its not surprising he will quit, the F A think throwing money at everything gets results whether its players or managers, what happened to pride playing for your country?(croatia being a good example).Limit the foreigners or the england team will be in the wilderness for a long time, you can't have it both ways!
guys don't worry you still the fa cup to aim for :-)) you got all this money to invest but only concentrate on the leagues and in the national team you look poor. Capello must think how bad are you! invest on youngesters giv them a chance, start play the ball more around instead of trowing long field, boring...
Forza Italia!
Rooney over hyped, are ye mad in the head or what? He's easily one of the best front men in the game even at his age, when henry was rooneys age he was a no-one, sure when he went to arsenal he couldnt score in a brothel! over hyped LMAO you havent a clue mate! he can pick out beckham style pinpoint 60 yard passes, he can win the ball, he can do the spectacular and score from nothing, he sets up goals and when he plays united win more games than when he doesnt, 5 last season they lost, the 5 rooney didnt play and when he plays with england he is easily the most determined on the pitch, the chap is world class, and all that from an Irishman who doesnt support united!
As for Capello, he has his work cut out for him if this is the way english supporters react when he says hes going to retire after the world cup! madness, you's easily have one of the best managers in the game and still complaining, the man said he wants to put england in the top 3 of the world before he retires and you complain! lol madness!
hru Sussex.....
cant u understand english or wot!!!
he meant "35% of the players in EFL are English, while 72 % of players in Serie A are Italian....dats y Lippi had a better chance winning the world cup in 2006"
xx
"In the Premier League only 35 percent of the players are English, while in Italy it is around 72 percent." Wow, 72% of the Italian league players are English are they? Only joking, fair do's to the fella, in the few months he's been in charge he has learned our language to a decent degree, far more than most of us will ever learn Italian anyway.
Onto footy matters. This is just an example, it is ok playing the likes of Beckham but Fabio has to look at the players he will be taking to South Africa and actually starting matches "IF" we get there. Beckham is proven, like him or lump him, and could be put into the squad without a 2nd thought but Capello needs to be playing the likes of Bentley or Milner or whomever in that position as I doubt we would get a 90min match out of Beckham, especially in 2 years time and especially in the South African heat & humidity. As I said, this is just an example (not a dig at Beckham) but Capello needs to look across the whole of the team with the same mentality or we will be found wanting...again. I also agree with the people that are saying Top 3 in S.A. wouldn't be a bad thing, it's progress at least (especially after this summer) but I'm sure if we qualify we will be in it to win it without doubt.
And another thing you dickheads keep forgetting, if English talent is so @#$%, why is it so expensive. That's why they buy overseas, even low teams buy overseas. If you are in the bottom half of the Premier League it is a lot cheaper to buy someone from the top of the Iceland League then someone from the Championship for Div 1. That's why even the Championship is full of aliens. Our better players don't get a chance because cheap @#$% is available in far flung lands
THIS STORY HAS BEEN REPORTED WRONG AND CAPELLO'S WORDS HAVE BEEN TWISTED. He did not say he would quit after the world cup, however he did say that his contract is under review after the world cup and that he would like to end his career having been successfull at a world cup, his exact words being - "I would like to end my career having made an impact at a World Cup." What has also been omitted from this article is his quate of "I will see out my contract with England,". The story is a complete Sun esque lie.
R.F.C No.1 !!!!!!!
I agree with him
Rooney has been to be honest overhyped compared to how Henry and Shevchenko used to what they were able to play like.
It's become rather tiresome Britain has such a poor youth system that as soon as a talented player comes along they glorify him with press coverage and sponsership deals that by the time he's in his early 20's then he's made football one of the least of his concerns. That was pretty much aimed at Rooney, Walcott may turn out to be a success because the press don't seem to be too interested in him. Strange
Capello is doing the right choice. He hasn't got any material to work with. He takes england to world cup and if they do well he leaves on a high like Lippi did for Italy. He is probably fed up with this weather too, when you gonna have some sunshine in this country? on a serious note, premier league hire too many foreingers they shoud giv a chance to the youngsters and bring them to the national level, otherwise you will never achieve anything internationally.
