The Football Association have moved quickly to deny reports Fabio Capello will quit as England coach two years before his contract expires after the Italian was quoted in a newspaper as saying he planned to retire after the World Cup in 2010.
An FA spokesman said he had spoken to Capello, who had clarified his comments made to La Repubblica.
Capello said he was "concentrating on one thing at a time at the moment and giving his full concentration to the 2010 World Cup", the spokesman said.
He added that the 62-year-old was not looking or thinking beyond that target at the moment and said he had "no intention to quit the England job after the World Cup".
Capello was quoted by La Repubblica as having identified the end of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as his retirement date.
"This is certain," he told the Rome-based daily when asked if he no longer planned to coach after the World Cup.
The comment came after he ruled out a possible return to Italy as coach of the national team.
"My shift ends with England," he added. "My work on the field ends with the English experience."
He added that he would like to end his career by taking England to "among the top three in the world" in South Africa. He also complained about the amount of talent at his disposal as England coach.
"I'm worse off than [Italy coach Marcello] Lippi," he said. "In the Premier League only 35 percent of the players are English, while in Italy it is around 72 percent."
Capello takes charge of England in a competitive match for the first time when they begin their World Cup campaign in six weeks' time.

Capello, without actually saying it, has carpeted England for its failure to develop local talent. Beyond the current crop of Europeanized players (all 1st 22 are playing under European coaches!) he sees little else to challenge him. That is what u get for wanting to win Premiership and champions league at all costs. Even teams like Man City want Ronaldinho!
Capello didnt say he was leaving after the world cup he said that he will end his career after england and possibly leaving after the world cup if england dont make an impact in the world cup...so basically he's leaving after the world cup
Fabio Capello will win something for England, then he will return to Italy to manage the Azzurri and win the Fifth World Cup for Italy....
to wrae41 I rather have an English team play Italian style football and WIN WORLD CUPS then have an English team playing LONG BALLS FOOTBALL and get BOOT OUT im DISGRACE by countries such as "Croatia" the size of population of London!!
England first and foremost must build a football Academy thus we can develop future English players.Fabio Capello is right when he says that only 35% in the EPL are English. Today we dont have good teams of under 19 and under 21 nationals so we cannot compete to nations as Italy,Germany,France,Holland,Russia,Romania,Portugal and so forth. It's actually pathetic that nobody from the FA has ever mentioned it !!!!!
England players have too much pressure on them in major championships. Unless they can stage the championship and play all games at Wembley then they probably wont have a chance to win a big prize again. Going down the foreign route with Capello probably wont work and i dont think the fans are going to enjoy watching England playing in an Italian style while he is in charge.
Chris W, do you support Spurs? The only reason I ask is down to your pathetic comment 'The sooner Man utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal bugger off into a proper european league the better. Only then will we get a competitive premiership league'. Spurs would still finish mid table even if those 4 did 'bugger off'. Get behind England and the manager and lets hope we are in S.Africa for the World Cup!!!
He does look like Bert!
What a laugh, when he took the job he said he was aware of the British press and how he could easily have a hard time, be misquoted and endure insults. Guess the genius didn't bother to have a good look at his own Italian press. Hahahaha. Idiot
Well said Ben, the media ruin things, gutter rags.
Fabio Capello looks like bert from sesame street!
Foreign players, foreign managers and foreign owners and we already know that only one of the top two teams are going to win the premiership again even before the first ball has been kicked. Overrated, oversold and downright boring. same old same old. Big money has ruined football in this country. The sooner Man utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal bugger off into a proper european league the better. Only then will we get a competitive premiership league.
why do we get embroiled with these tyres of stories!! why dont we concentrate on the 'on field matters' for once. as mentioned earlier, we are guilty in this country, particularly the media, for jumping on the backs of our players and managers. No one has been more critical than me of Frank Lampard and of Sven when he was in charge. But look at the treatment Hargreaves got in the last world cup, he was booed by England fans and in the end he showed the most passion and the most bottle. Capello said this will be his last job, Im sure he will want to go out on a high. why don’t we get behind him and the team for a change instead of piling on the pressure as usual. jonathan andrews, you are spot on, United has always made an effort to have a balanced team and to represent English/British players
What is emma girl on about?
As a reply to the first comment, from our friend north of the border. We thought that Scotland had a good team until we saw how bad France and Italy were in the Europeans. Scotland are rubbish!
Believe me because my surname is McCormack.
Im scottish (I can hear the boos already),I feel the England team has suffered because the Premiership is so full of foreign players. Look at Scotland, we have a pretty half decent team and the S.P.HELL!! is a poor league
What difference doe`s any of this report make ? I can`t understand for the life of me why anyone would want to be the Manager of England.
Until we have enough English players, playing in the top flight leagues in this Country,we will always be in a downward spiral.
The only sure and certain way to qualify for a competiton, is to be granted the Host Country status. Don`t take my word for this, just take a long look of the present Internetional Squad and the achievements to date.
"united is one of the teams that does more damage to english football than anything else"
How do you make that judgement raeheid? Currently Carrick, Hargreaves, Ferdinand, Brown and Rooney are fairly regular players, either first team or at least in the squad.
Then in the recent past there have been Manchester United players such as Beckham, G Neville, P. Neville, Scholes, Sheringham, Andy Cole, Butt to name just a few.
The England team has relied on the top teams such as Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool for their players. The problems of only having a relatively small number of England players in your squad goes much further than Man U, and I reckon other teams are more guilty of having more foreign players.
Capello hasn't warmed his boots yet, and already talk about quitting. Such a shame, and people still don't realize the serious crisis in english football, and the damage the premierleague has done to the national team. A damage that will hunt the english forever, as with the current and the near future mentality England will not get better.
Such a shame that such talk is already entering the minds of both Capello and those in charge of England. But perhaps the superpowers are fading after all England leading them all. And sam , united is one of the teams that does more damage to english football than anything else.
the way we play we'll be lucky to even reach the world cup...top 3...he's living in a bloody dream world.
The English International game will be ruined if the English players realise Capello will retire soon it's just like at Old Trafford a few years ago when Fergusson said he would leave it unsettled the United players we don't want the same to happen to the underachieving English Internationals....
