Everton captain Phil Neville has signalled his intention to see out his career at Goodison Park by signing a new four-year contract.

The 31-year-old has tied himself to the club until 2012 after extending his existing deal, which had two years left to run.

"Loyalty is a big thing in my life and this is the only club that I want to play for. It's a great club and I want to finish my career here," Neville said.

The former England international joined Everton from Manchester United in 2005 and has impressed with his versatility and leadership, and took over the captaincy from David Weir in January 2007.

Neville said he had enjoyed a smooth negotiation process, and took aim at the increasing number of players - including former England team-mate Frank Lampard - involved in long-running transfer wrangles.

"At the end of last season I spoke to the manager, while my father, who looks after my dealings, spoke to the chairman and it was quite easy," he said.

"When you've got two parties who want the same deal and are happy with each other these things only take a couple of hours.

"I can't understand players who go into negotiations for six months because that tells me that one party involved isn't happy about things.

"But that wasn't the case with us. It took one meeting and one telephone call and it was as easy as that."

Neville has made 131 appearances for the Toffees, scoring three goals.

  5. Worst player to ever play for England!! I'll never forgive him for what he did against Romania. I'm just pleased he's staying at Everton so Stevie G can run him ragged. Again.
