Premier League - Transfer Talk: Hasta luego, Rob

Eurosport - Fri, 25 Jul 20:44:00 2008

If reports are to be believed, Robbie Keane is set to join Liverpool, a move even the most die-hard Spurs fan should not begrudge.

FOOTBALL; Robbie Keane, Tottenham, March 2008 - 0

It's hard to believe Ireland's captain and record goalscorer is only 28. He seems to have been around forever, bursting on the scene as a teenager with Wolves, hitting a dozen goals in his first top-flight season with Coventry and sealing a surprise, if ill-fated, move to Internazionale - all before his 20th birthday.

A brief spell at Leeds followed, but it was at Tottenham Hotspur where Keane really flourished. In six seasons he has scored over 100 goals, reached double figures in the league in every campaign and captained his club in the absence of the injury-prone Ledley King.

Keane was left out of the pre-season tour finale against Spanish side Hercules last night, which the Daily Express and The Times in particular see as proof that he will join the Latin-themed Reds in a £20 million deal.

He will finally get the chance to play Champions League football without a whine, a huff or a statement through his agent. Fellow Reds target Gareth Barry took the "direct" approach, and now may have to stay at Aston Villa.

The Daily Telegraph reckon Zenit star Andrei Arshavin would replace Keane at Spurs.

The Sun, meanwhile, report that Chelsea's move for Robinho could be back on after his contract talks with Real Madrid stalled.

And, not wanting to be left out of rivals Manchester United and Liverpool's public wooing of players, the Blues have declared their interest.

"We can confirm that we are interested in Robinho and that we have had some conversations with the club," Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said. "We remain in dialogue with Madrid."

Younes "earthquake" Kaboul may have been offered a lifeline out of being forced to join Sunderland as Aston Villa have reportedly hijacked the Black Cats' bid for the Tottenham defender.

The Press Association say that Kaboul - whose agent implied wouldn't even join Sunderland in the event of heavy seismic activity levelling the rest of the country - changed his mind about the city after meeting Roy Keane and seeing the facilities at their training ground.

But Martin O'Neill's Villa are short at the back after the loss of Olof Mellberg, and a £5 million price-tag is well within their range.

Chelsea outcast Shaun Wright-Phillips will move to Portsmouth - provided Internazionale's bid for Sulley Muntari goes through (all papers). Inter have accepted that Ghana midfielder Muntari is a more realistic - and younger - proposition than Frank Lampard, and will pay £12.8m, which is almost 100 percent profit in one year from king wheeler-dealer Harry Redknapp.

The Guardian think that Barcelona's interest in Emmanuel Adebayor and Didier Drogba is still alive, despite the former's prohibitive asking price and the latter's age. Barca boss Pep Guardiola was less convinced though, merely saying "those players are interesting but so are many others".

In a move that will further distress angry, perma-tanned Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, Arsenal are looking to compound their misery of losing John Bostock to Spurs for £700,000 by signing 17-year-old forward Victor Moses for £1m. Seething Robbie Savage look-a-like Jordan wants triple that amount, which he has about as much chance of getting as a haircut.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis clearly lacks confidence in the ability of Richard Cresswell and the knees of Ricardo Fuller to partner record signing Dave Kitson, as he is sizing up Greece forward Angelos Charisteas, according to The Sun. The 28-year-old is available for £5 million from FC Nuremburg.

In a final Greek connection, crime victim and all-round nice-guy Emile Heskey could be set for a welcome windfall as former Chelsea assistant Henk ten Cate lines up a £6m bid to take the Wigan forward to Panathinaikos (Daily Mirror). The cash-rich Greeks have already signed Gilberto Silva from Arsenal and Ten Cate is using his Premier League contacts to launch an assault on the Champions League this season. Sun, sea, sailboats and souvlaki versus "rubbish"-jibes, rain, relegation scraps and KNIFE CRIME - do it for us, Emile.

  1. the point about reminding liverpool that they have never won the premiership is just a nice way to remind you guys that you have sucked for nearly 20 years.... liverppol have been succesful is europe but if ya 4th at home does winning in europe really mean anything? i dont think so, i dont think the 4th team in england should even be in the champions league, it is the CHAMPIONS league after all, first team, maybe the second should be there but the 4th, thats abit silly. champions league is the hardest tournment to win i agree, mainly because like any tournament with knockout stages luck is almost as important as skill, in the league a team must keep going for a whole season, something liverpool simply dont seem to be able to do. and i love how even liverpool players talk about it just being nice if liverpool are still in with a chance come christmas, how defeatist lol

  2. Actually Liam it aint really the English who mostly say the Premier league is the best in the world, its the rest of the world that say it, us English spend most of the time ranting how @#$% sport is in this little country of ours so when anyone outside tells us the Premier league is the best League in the world its a breath of fresh air, we are always putting our sports down, we enjoy it, its the english way to have a real good moan about everything and then we pick up and rant how good things are, it keeps our english heads on the ground lol
I agree about the Champions League being the best by the way!
Although Quater-Finals onwards aint a league anymore are they, I'll always see the CL as the European Cup, and the Premier League as just simply the English Title, change the name, change the trophy it always will be, like e.g. being a Liverpool fan our Man United Neighbours always imform us we have never won the Premier League but now they say they are only one behind us, how can that be if we have never won the Premier League?
Surely the old title is the same thing!
Because if it isn't, they will never catch our 18 League Titles and should stay at 7, they cant have it both ways! lol

  11. I don't get where all this rubbish about Keane being a childhood Liverpool fan has come from; he was a Celtic fan. Do a news search, check his wikipedia and other sites about him, whatever - up until this deal came up they all said the same, you can see this by checking newspaper articles about him before and after May this year.

That's just an excuse to make people sympathise with his cowardice.

  13. to tomsthebestetc: if you,ve seen kaboul youll have realised he is not a defender and it's puzzling why he has always been played as such. even in the few games he played it is easy to see the difference in his play when in opponents halves. talk of a new employer playing him as a centre - half is literally a move forward . good luck to him.
