UEFA Cup - Villa reach UEFA Cup after win

Eurosport - Sun, 27 Jul 10:25:00 2008

Aston Villa are through to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup after beating Danish outfit Odense 1-0 in the second leg of their Intertoto Cup third-round clash at Villa Park.

FOOTBALL 2008 - Aston Villa's Ashley Young scores against Odense in the Intertoto Cup - 0

Ashley Young's sensational second-half effort secured Villa a 3-2 aggregate win a place in next month's UEFA Cup final qualifying round.

But the real spin-off for Martin O'Neill could revolve around Gareth Barry, whose introduction for Wilfred Bouma went far better than the Northern Irishman had hoped, the cordial relationship between player and fans fuelling belief that Villa will thwart Liverpool in their attempts to sign the England star.

Bouma suffered a dislocated ankle as he flew into a tackle with Baye Djiby Fall but Young gave the Villa fans something to cheer as he cut inside from the left and lashed a right-footed thunderbolt into the top corner on 50 minutes.

Odense had struck the post in the first half through a scuffed effort from Fall, but Villa were in control for long periods and also struck the woodwork themselves late on when John Carew headed against the crossbar.

  3. Just thought i'd throw this one in but why dont they make the uefa cup more interesting by giving the winners a champions league spot makes nothing but sense ..................?

  4. OB is not part-timers!!! They are in the top league in Denmark, just because they are not as good a team as te premier league teams does not make them part-timers! And they were by far the best team in the first leg...

  5. We don´t need Barry if Alonso is not sold. Barry is a quality player but we need better side-defenders

  6. If a team is not in the Premier League it becomes automatically "a bunch of part timers" then, am I right?

  7. Dear Mikenott

We scored 71 goals last season so someone put those in the back of the net.
We do however need some squad depth and hence improved competition for places.
Might be time to put a bid in for Stevie Gerrard ;0)

We need a recognized right back, a recognized left back, a utility defender that can play all across the back line.
We were not solid enough defensively last season. O and if Gabby increased his goal tally to double figures or put away 1 chance in 2 instead of one chance in five we would stand achance of winning something this season AVFC means business this season boys

  14. I'm sorry fellas, while Villa are a decent team. Uefa Cup glory won't beckon, when you can only beat a bunch of part timers 3-2, over two legs.

There's some hard teams in the Uefa this season, it'll be as hard as winning the CL.
