Bordeaux warmed up for the defence of their Ligue 1 title by outplaying second division Guingamp 2-0 in the pre-season Champions Trophy.

Argentine striker Fernando Cavenaghi opened the scoring from inside the area after collecting a fine pass by left-back Benoit Tremoulinas seven minutes before the break.

Bordeaux had wasted several chances to move further ahead when Brazilian midfielder Fernando doubled the advantage in added time, tapping home after a Yoann Gourcuff free kick had bounced off the far post.

Coupe de France winners Guingamp resisted bravely under sustained pressure for most of the first half but Bordeaux then stepped up a gear.

The curtain raiser between the league champions and Cup holders, introduced in 1995 and won by Bordeaux last year, was staged outside France for the first time in a bid to promote French football overseas.

The game was played on synthetic turf in Montreal's covered Olympic Stadium before a 34,000 crowd, a record for the event. The Ligue 1 restarts on August 8.
