World number one Dinara Safina charged into the semi-finals in Slovenia by crushing Italian Maria Elena Camerin 6-3 6-0 at WTA Portoroz.

TENNIS Dinara Safina - 0

"I raised my level in the second set. I played much better, much more aggressive ... I was very focused today and played some good tennis," the Russian said.

Safina never looked back after reeling off the first three games of the match.

Camerin, 100th in the rankings, had no chance as her powerful opponent kept up her record of not dropping a set in the tournament.

Safina next faces Italy's Alberta Brianti after she put out France's Camille Pin 6-3 6-2.

Swiss Stefanie Voegele ousted Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay 6-1 6-1 and next meets holder Sara Errani of Italy who breezed to a 6-1 6-1 triumph over Croatia's Petra Martic.

  1. According to some of you world number one has to play only(!) GranSlams. Or maybe you haven`t ever seen other tournaments. Maybe you think that tennis is only four GS tournaments every year and nothing else... It`s ridiculous. There is a tennis tournament in my native city, and of course I wanna see №1 here though Kremlin Cup isn`t Wimbledon. Because Wimbledon is not the only place where tennis can live.

  5. Dinara Safina is slowly becoming the most ridiculed no. 1 player since the inception of the ranking system back in 1975. It is quite safe to assert that she has earned the top rank position through her consistent play...even at the Grand Slams events! However, her persistent chroncic nerve and mental melt down in major events has left her in search for serious remedy of what to do to emerge from the terrible state of public mockery of her status as the world's no.1 player. Resolving to play in tier 2 or 3 events for a Grand Slam warm up match is a stage below a walk-in-park for her status. Safina needs tough mental and nerve challenging tournaments prior to Grand slam events or the likes The Williams Sisters or any top 10 player will attack her nerves and her mental state. I really feel for Safina but her coach absolutely need to search and find the right answer to get her out of her current funk.

yes Dinara Safina raised her level of tennis to beat a world ranked very effective 100th player 6-3, 6-0. what a great match for no 1 player. The same result she got trashed 6-1, 6-0 by Venus Williams in GS tournament in Wimbledon. This summed up her mental state. She played better now with a 100th ranked unknown oponent.. This is her level and still no 1 in women's wta tour tennis not no1 in GS level.. She obviously brought down wta women's tennis. No wonder sponsors are not using this one for any advert.

  12. It's ridiculous the amount of stick this girl gets, while not necessarally being the biggest fan of her game, I can still appreciate her consistency. The consistency that WTA players (inc. the top 10) has been lacking recently.
