On the eve of the ascent to Mont Ventoux, Blazin' Saddles thinks that those Contador-to-Garmin rumours might well have something in them.
It just makes perfect sense, doesn't it? With the birth of a third US-based team, the Lance Armstrong-led RadioShack, Garmin would need something to make them more than also-rans - especially given Columbia-HTC's continued dominance on the flat with Mark Cavendish.
RadioShack's probable boss Johan Bruyneel, whose dislike of Garmin is as apparent as BS's lack of humour today, would see his alleged mistreatment of Contador come back to bite him in the balls, while the Spaniard would have that extra bit of motivation to turn the screw on his old employers.
Before Friday's stage 19, Eurosport cameras were allowed in the Astana team bus and caught Bruyneel giving instructions to ensure that under no circumstances were Garmin allowed to be involved in any breakaway.
This made Contador laugh, to which Bruyneel responded: "You know it's a personal thing, Alberto." The Belgian is obviously still reeling after the rival team of Bradley Wiggins ruined his old friend George Hincapie's chance of taking yellow before the Alps.
Despite the unexpected highs of Wiggins' Tour this year, however, Garmin, for all their promise, have little to show for their efforts: Tyler Farrar won no sprints, the team were beaten by Astana in the ITT and big guns Millar, Zabriskie, Vande Velde and Wiggins didn't deliver a stage victory.
Adding Contador to a clearly exciting mix of riders would take Jonathan Vaughters' outfit to the next level. It would elevate them above the old foe in Columbia and would be a huge psychological blow for the new RadioShack. Of course, Wiggins might not be best pleased, but there's no guarantee the Britain will prove a solid contender next year.
Asked about the possibility of Contador's arrival on Friday, Vaughters just said: "Next question" - proving the Spaniard's touch is already rubbing off a little.
But Garmin are also renowned for their stringent ethical code and the hiring of a rider whose past is not entirely unblemished - and whose present abilities were only too recently questioned by a former Tour winner - may prove the stumbling block. Contador has never failed a test, but Vaughters may prefer to wait a couple of months before he puts a firm offer down on the table.
CAV CINQ: BS has picked on the Isle of Man sprinter in the past but that's because he's such an easy target. Just listening to most of his interviews is enough to will a mass pile-up of Columbia riders during the next stage's sprint finish.
But on Friday Cav displayed true grit in securing a record-breaking ninth Tour triumph after the tricky second-category Col de l'Escrinet and a slippery, uphill finish in Aubenas.
With Tony Martin and not Mark Renshaw assuming lead-out duties, Columbia also proved their train has more than a solitary driver and so it was a doubly sweet win. BS was even moved by the humility and graciousness displayed by the 24-year-old in his post-race interview.
Of course, until he is willing - and capable - to climb mountains twice as hard at the beginning of a stage and just for a handful of intermediate sprints (a la Hushovd), the green may elude him. Still, with an astonishing sixth win a near dead-cert on Sunday, it's hard to criticise him.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I may not be in the yellow jersey but I feel I've won. Look at the impact this comeback has had on the (Lance Armstrong Cancer) Foundation, it doesn't matter if I win or lose and that's reality."
Let's clear this up: BS is no Lance-hater. Like Cav, the guy's an east target - and he actively courts it by his constant interaction with both the media and public. Being on course for a podium finish aged 37 and after so many years out - not to mention that collarbone injury - is almost as great an achievement as winning the darn thing for the first time in the first place.
Besides, anyone who, in a rather short space of time, has had romantic dalliances with people old enough to be BS's mother (Sheryl Crow) and BS's daughter (Ashley Olsen) certainly commands respect.
PLAT DU JOUR: A glass of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and an omelette with fresh truffles will do nicely, s'il vous plait.
PREDICTION: It's been a rotten Tour for previous big guns Cadel Evans, Carlos Sastre and Denis Menchov, the latter going down more often than an obliging prostitute on the Kursk.
BS would like to see them give it one final effort for old times' sake - they have nothing to lose. Two riders who will certainly give it their all are the Schleck whippets who, if there was a Weight Watchers team, would certainly be front-runners for a place.
The sentimentalists out there will hope to see Armstrong break his Ventoux duck, however, and with Contador promising to lend his team-mate a hand, BS can envisage the two riding over the summit together, arm in arm, a la Hinault-Lemond, before Alberto speeds ahead and nicks it by a wheel's length to give Lance a third career 2nd place atop the Giant of Provence.

Perseus, Kursk was a Russian submarine that tragically sank. Like BS's prostitute, it,too, went down.
I hope Contador gets a team that appreciates him and not one where someone tries to undermine him.
Incidentally, Mr Liggett, for precisely what help and assistance was Contador repaying the toxic Texan?
"Of course, until he is willing - and capable - to climb mountains twice as hard at the beginning of a stage and just for a handful of intermediate sprints (a la Hushovd), the green may elude him. Still, with an astonishing sixth win a near dead-cert on Sunday, it's hard to criticise him."
If Cavendish hadn't had a stage win scrubbed off after his desperate attempt to get Hincapie in yellow, then wouldn't he be comfortably in green already with the near dead-cert to come?
"Garmin are also renowned for their stringent ethical code and the hiring of a rider whose past is not entirely unblemished .... may prove the stumbling block"
Millar, anyone?
hope u debook it and eat your words worldwide should u be proved wrong.
Don't forget Kloden- an unsung hero who has done a great job helping Contador and Armstrong. Jeez, that guy has been an uber-domestique to the world's best cyclists for a decade- Ullrich, Armstrong and Contador. Always with the big guns on the cols. Sadly don't think he'll make 3rd this year. Kloden deserves a medal 'though.
On the issue of Garmin and Contador, I suspect that a British Sky team might draw a few Brits from Garmin or Columbia, and Armsrong's RadioShack might draw a few Ammericans from Garmin or Columbia.
'
The two 'nationality orientated' new teams of Radioshack and Sky will very likely weaken Columbia and Garmin in 2010.
Either way, next year promises to be very entertaining for us Brits, at long last!!
Do you think anyone even knows where Kursk is?
With reference to comment number 16 made by canadaam:
Man you need to listen a little bit more to the stories/rumours that circulate in the cycling community. Whilst I in no way suggest the rumours were true, did you not read about the stories that tried to associate the Schleck brother with some sort of performance enhancing products, about 8 months ago? Wake up man...... there have been similar stories associated with almost every top rider at some point. So stop lance-bashing just for the hell of it, and if you are going to leave comments here, at least try to make them look as if they were written by an adult.
Yes 100% Lance would give AC his whell its not about bike riding any more for him even though its in his blood it never goes away, but the foundation is the key its a Tax free haven you can make more in a foundation through private Trading Real ones" and do real good for people from it, Lance plays the od game but he would not hurt that image ,his part bike rider and part Business man now. I would love to help on the foundation,

what I was going to say was would Armstong give contador his wheel
Think of this on the Mont Ventoux there is a break away of four riders with a gap of 4 minutes the riders are Contador, Armstrong and the two Schleck brothers the team cars are being held up by peloton bunch and with no neutral service car ( I know this would not happen but just in case it did)and Contador got a puncher .
Contador will sign for Columbia - remember where you saw it first.
The Schlecks will experience this time how to be at the defensive when climbing the Ventoux. If they attack, they will surely crack. Climbing the Ventoux is like going on an individual time trial. Astana at 1,2,3 in the finish line.
Contador will leave Astana and go to Caisse d'erpargne
Well done on this.. Without the attempt at sarcastic humor you did a good job.. see if you can keep it up.
Bon Matin ............... it's here!!......at last.......... the big kahoona ........... the man-maker ......... the man-breaker........... the tour gamble that has just about worked ............. a soap opera indeed and as in all good soaps......... we need the 'baddie' (nasty nik aka lemond)............ the twins ...( canny see the mitchells/schleks oan a tandem). ........ the interfering rumour monger ( dot cotton aka any gc contender). ...the many twisting plots and of course the final denoument ........... canny wait ........... prediction ? ......... lance to put the @#$% right up everyone....the schlecks to pedal like billy whizz on speed ........ therers only one winner .......... and thats le tour ............... viva le tour !!!!!!!

Sylvia, if you are going to criticise spelling of others, even supposed professionals then your own spelling should'nt be open to the same ridicule.
Looking forward to carnage on the Ventoux. Would like to think the podium will get a right royal stir up but have a feeling that the top three will not change today. Followed by win No 7 for the pocket rockets team tomorrow.
The seven-time drug cheater is dead. Long live the Schlecks. Ventoux will finally do what no animate object has been able to do, make the Lance loving sheep disappear. They are worse than the people who think Barry Bonds didnt cheat and that OJ was innocent. For shame, obedient and loyal Dopestrong peons. Shame on you all for your blind loyalty to the Toxic Texan. You should be applauding clean athletes and fairplay, in all aspects and all sports. Just because someone recovered from cancer does not make them any less of a cheating scumbag who has ruined the \tour for the last decade. Thank you Schlecks for restoring my faith in competitive cycling. Unfortunately Fakestrong, all you get from me is a middle finger. You phony, arrogant and manipulative human being. You are so ugly to the people who see right through your fraudulent act. Exposed sunshine. And I am super loving every minute of it.
Sorry El Pistolero, you are a great cloimber and great champion, however you forget two things. One, the Schleck brothers have been the impetus for the mountains and the tour this year. When Andy and Frank attack the monster that is Ventoux, only you will be able to match their pace. Everyone else will be cracked. Further, Andy will want to win a stage this year. Among the three great climbers this year, only he has not won a mountain stage. Secondly, and more importantly, no matter how much the Lance lovers try to deny it, there has been one major truth revealed this year. And that is that Drugstrong has been exposed. Unless he takes some serious testosterone prior to the stage ala that other big American cheat, Fraud Landis, he will be dropped by everyone but Wiggo. Heck, dont be surprised if Sastre spanks Cadel...er Lance Dopestrong. I always mix up Evans and post drug Armstrong. An easy mistake. Ventoux baby. Andy Schleck baby. Book it. Conta wins the tour, Schlecks 2 and 3 .
@worldwide
Let me get this right, are you saying that after todays stage Armstrong will be 12 minutes down?
