Burley Opposed To GB Team

Scotland manager George Burley insists the Scottish Football Association remain steadfast in their opposition to the idea of a combined Great Britain team competing in the 2012 London Olympics.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown became the latest high-profile figure to champion the idea while insisting his fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson could take charge of the side.

However Burley, speaking at the opening of Falkirk's new football centre based at Stirling University, reiterated the SFA's and his own opposition.

He said: "It's been black and white from day one with the SFA.

"The national team comes first and at the moment we are keen to keep our nationality intact.

"We have to have a national Scottish team and we can't put that in jeopardy so there has been no change."

Burley is also opposed to the idea of a home international competition with the champions representing Britain at the London Games.

He said: "That's all hypothetical.

"The problem with international games is getting dates for them so it doesn't even come into the equation."

  1. Whats the big deal!!! why shouldent we all be united for the olympics (England,Northan ireland,Scottland and Wales) united we stand seperate we will fall. Its true England did not win the war on its own this is whay its called a world war. But why did it take on of the world gratest dictaters to bring us all together. If we all stuck together insted of bickering between each other and learned to respect each others views and belives without forcing our own apon one another we realy could produce a better world why shouldent we start small and unite for the olympics.

  4. west_of_sneck i am speaking of what i have learnt.. and if Northern Ireland was part of Great Britain i would never not include them...
    And i could care less now.... Great Britain is too diverse these days... Everyone who is anyone can feel like they are part of this magnificant island the world produced.

    This whole thing is about the OLYMPICS!!!!!!!!!!

For christs sake people, get a grip.All Im seeing is hatred for things that happened hundreds of years ago ( mostly) I watched stock car racing for years and the scots at the big meets always had flags going on about the 1 time they beat the english 700 years ago. Please grow up you lot.As and englishman I have to deal with the scots/irish/welsh/french/spanish/germans/muslims/australians etc etc hating me for things that happened millenia ago.This is the 21st century, england is in the top handfull of the most friendly countries in the world to all immigrants/races.As for the jocks, well were would you be but for us dumb english funding all your free education/health etc.And please dont quote the oil as that was funded by us and the north sea is empty, for us at least.

  9. richard_saunders15 Yep, Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain. Geographicaly speaking, neither are places like the Isle of White, Lewis and Harris, the Shetlands etc.

    However, i was simply pointing out that in the Olympic context of the forum, Team GB includes N.I. Varisha wrote "Team Great Britain is about 3 nations (England, Scotland and Wales) combined together to produce an amazing performance in the Olympics."

    Is it Richard? Is what Varisha wrote correct?

    Secondly.. i'm afraid you lack in knowledge. Great Britain is 3/4 of United Kingdom...

    United Kingdom is England, Northen Ireland, Scotland and wales... while Great Britain only England, Scotland and wales...

    Get your fact rights before passing judgement on other people's comments... i don't slave on education in getting a simple fact wrong. But, i see you do. Enough said!

  19. In the commonwealth games I shout for the English - In the Olympics for the British - I dont care if Chris Hoy is Scottish or English - in the Olympics he rides for Britain and Addlington swims for Britian. Its so easy. TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER.
