Sunderland ripped apart nine-man Norwich with three goals in the space of 10 first-half minutes to win their Carling Cup second-round tie 4-1 at Carrow Road.
The Coca-Cola League One side, under new boss Paul Lambert, were undone far too easily on the break as Teemu Tainio set the ball rolling for the Barclays Premier League club, before Andy Reid netted a well-taken double.
Wes Hoolahan reduced the deficit just after the hour, only for Owain Tudur Jones to deflect a corner into his own net minutes later, before Norwich finished with nine men when last man Michael Spillane was sent off for a professional foul on Frazier Campbell, and keeper Ben Alnwick suffered a cut to his face.
It looked like Norwich could take advantage during the early exchanges and the home fans were calling for a penalty after just six minutes when Nyron Nosworthy bundled over teenage striker Luke Daley, although referee Anthony Taylor was unimpressed.
Sunderland, though, looked dangerous on the break and took the lead in the 26th minute when Kenwyne Jones brushed off the challenge of Gary Doherty before darting into the right side of the penalty area and cutting the ball back to Tainio, who drilled in a low shot from 10 yards.
It was 2-0 moments later when Reid chipped exquisitely over Alnwick into the far corner
The third goal came in the 36th minute when Campbell played in Reid to finish off a sweeping move, as Norwich were once again torn apart on the break.
Norwich upped the tempo at the start of the second period and their pressure paid off in the 63rd minute when Jon Otsemobor's cross from the right was headed against the far post by substitute Cody McDonald - and Hoolahan knocked the ball into an unguarded net.
However, any thoughts of a comeback were quickly ended when Tudur Jones deflected a corner into his own net.
Spillane, as the last defender, was sent off in the 82nd minute for pulling back Campbell, who slid into the keeper and Alnwick had to go off for treatment to a cut face, meaning McDonald spent the closing minutes as a make-shift goalkeeper as the Canaries had already used all three substitutions.

MALCOLM D, if you have dyslexia, please accept my fullest and sincere apology.
As for the footie, most of this stuff is banter and yes, of course we are competitive and most mackems fight their corner very well.
But, a few don't and resort to, well your tactics and sign off every post FTM and everything black and white etc etc. I haven't got a problem with that and keep it up by all means, but don't expect sweetness and nice back.
In future, I won't poke any fun at your sentence structure, grammar etc and if you do have dyslexia then your not doing bad at all, in fact you haven't got a problem.
Again as for the footie, I never watched the game and know very little of what Norwich are up to but decided to have a bit fun with Sean A, of which I think he enjoys and instigates because as I said, it's a bit of fun (banter) and that's why most of us, black and white and red and white come on here.
We beat a poor team who actually had good chances to score there'll be a tougher tie to come, but its a game we might have lost last season or any other season come to that, so well done & its a banana skin out the way.
Lee Clarkes blue'n white army!
FTM
Comment 6 You are so clever aren't you trying to be funny i think not dont give up your day job. You have shown your true ignorance about footballing matters and about a certain type of dyslexia.
1/ it was the Norwich Player who pushed Our player Campbell into Ben Alnwick, He deserved the straight red card and if anyone of them had been seriously injured he would have deserved to be banned for a very long time Luckily for him they were not.
2/ As for them being in dissaray, yes they are but they still performed better than yor team did against Leyton Orient or is that excuse just reserved fo league one teams????
3/ you and your barcoded colleagues should really learn a bit more about football before you come onto the only Premiership clubs site in the N/east and try to be critical ,analytical or satirical.
Have a nice day because I am
did you watch the game! (guess not)
that defender pushed campbell into ben anlwick (the keeper) and got both players injured! he deserved the straight red card, i hope there manager wont have any complaints! and i can see us going on to beat stoke this weekend 2-0, it would be good going into september in the top 5..........ha'way the lads.
Sean A, I stand corrected, league 1
"The underdogs usually play better" they were down to 9 men and didn't your lot biff their keeper up.
They should have had a pen aswell so it sounds like Sunderland had the ref in their pocket.
john, league 1 side............AND the underdogs usally play better!!!!
Paperboy, so you beat a league 2 team who are in disarray, everyone they have played has hammered them and you want to crack jokes and put the boot in.
Have some respect man, you were only playing Norwich, and you were expected to win.
Their is one thing you could do for me though since you are a Mackem, you couldn't translate comment 3 for me could you, I think it's something about a river that runs through Keswick.
A great team performance. The Cats are really purring now, so its no wonder the Canaries were beaten!
Great performance from the lads, should keep the first team on their toes.
greta cup result nowlets see if Andy Rid can do the same in the EPL?
brucie's babes keep on growing...away the lads
