Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Mineiro on a deal that will see the Brazilian stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season.
The defensive midfield player was released by Hertha Berlin at the end of last season and had been without a club since.
The 33-year-old becomes the third Brazilian in compatriot Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad, after defenders Alex and Juliano Belletti.
Mineiro has won 24 caps for Brazil and was a member of the 2006 World Cup squad, as well as appearing against England at Wembley in 2007.
Scolari told the club's official website: "He is a player that I need because I lost Michael Essien for six months. I have one midfielder like him, [John Obi] Mikel.
"So this week he will not play but maybe after 15 days to two weeks, he is ready to play normal games. He needs to play some games in the reserve team, and for me it is very good because I have one more player in this position. If not I have to put in Belletti or [Paulo] Ferreira, or [Michael] Ballack, and they are not for this position.
"I say to fans of Chelsea, if they remember [Claude] Makelele, Mineiro is the same. Good positionally, a very good marker. He is a man that works for the other players and he is also a good man outside of the pitch."
Mineiro spent 18 months with Berlin, making 36 Bundesliga appearances and scoring twice, after having moved to Europe from Brazil, where he had spells with Ponte Preta, Sao Paulo and Sao Caetano.

what a @#$% that omsar is
To micheal C: you say all that about chelsea supporters and ur a man utd fan!!! glory fan you are
I have never experienced a gathering of so many @#$% faced gob shites in one place until i clicked on this board !!It's supposed to be about football opinions not how ignorant you are !!!...
Chelsea caught him on his way to the post office for his pension, Great catch, sinigger, snigger
to Micheal C: I've been a Chelsea fan since 1963.
Been through all the high's and all the lows. Does that count as being a true fan Or are you one of those people with a selective memory for your own team. And does being a soldier and a bus driver count as being a wag and a yuppie. Wake up son and smell the coffee and grow up and live in the REAL WORLD.
Chelsea has been winning by fluke, this tyme round they will be in for a rude shock. Buying worn out players wont help you. Consider setting up a youth academy where you can nurture talent. Scolari should borrow a leaf from talismanic Wenger and build a team for the future not for today. The reason why chelsea died after Murinho left is because of building a team for today and being too much money - minded. Jaymo
And yes, this is the guy that Arsenal and Birmingham rejected!
sidman_1988 - United fans aren't talking about history you muppet, we are CURRENT EUROPEAN & PREMIERSHIP CHAMPIONS. Remember? So before you start spouting your usual @#$% just take a minute to think about that. Assuming 1988 is there as the year you were born, you dont care about history because you werent there to witness it. Simple - you are a glory hunting cockney scumbag. Don't write your drivel on these comments boards again
15days-2 weeks lol
Blues for Life. Yea we are not doing badly, so up blues.Let's give Mineiro a chance to prove himself. My concern now is our strikers particularly Anelka. He hasn't lived up to expectation. He has been wasting glaring chances. Big Phil, you got to take another look at this guy.
From Ndubuisi, Lagos
well done boss. go the blues!
hola why is it invalid???
It really cracks me up when I see Man Utd. fans talk about history. Big Deal.. So u have a huge history. So do Arsenal & Liverpool... guess what. Their fans know the obvious. Yesterday's History. U gotta live in the moment.
And besides. Stop ur yapping about the history bull@#$%. I mean seriously, every club has to come up at some point. And don't go talking about being big spenders u bunch of hypocritic weiners. Everyone knows money runs the show now. Besides, who were the biggest spenders in the EPL before Roman Abrahamovich took over?
Face it ppl... Football is being monopolised by big clubs. We need more and more businessmen to invest in clubs so dat the competition improves or soon ppl will lose interest in it. Nobody likes a league where u get the same winners season in season out.
Is it belneddar,or Bell End,yuppie t*t,you have no history, and have no place in the EPL only russian money put you there and Lampard is only there for money..............
to the idiot who said deco is past it, even me as a man utd fan can say bargain buy of he season
no offense but all you chelsea fans where were you 10 years ago, stamford bridge is full of wags and yuppees. chelsea till you die lol should be chgelsea since your born. by me (not a chelsea fan)
once again sussex by the sea your showing your stupidity... he is a free agent and was released by his old club before the saeson started.. he can sign for whoever he wants, whenever he wants... from what i hear hes a very good tackling DM with good positioning.. chelsea's depth is once again achieved!!
This rather makes a mockery of the "transfer window" if one can just sign players who are not with a club, hence no transfer takes place.
Isnt this the same guy who had a trial at arsenal but wenger turned him down? Che$ki getting another arsenal reject, brilliant!!
For the Chelsea Fans, No need worries about this Ugly looking dude. I've followed mineiro for a while, since Sao Paulo, where he scored the WINNING Goal against Liverpool on one of those World Cups ( club ) games in 2005 I believe. Ever since then he's been a Defensivce midfielder playing in the brazilian National team, and since Brazil's hasn't been hot lately, his performance has earned him a place on this chelsea club, even if it's only temporary. Good Luck .
