Swiss ace Fabian Cancellara claimed his third career gold in the men's time trial after crushing his rivals at the World Road Race Championships.
Gustav Larsson of Sweden finished a distant second to take the silver medal while Germany's Tony Martin finished third for the bronze.
Cancellara, who won the world title in both 2006 and 2007, averaged a speed of just over 51km/h for the 49.8km course which he completed in 57min 55sec.
Larsson was at 1:27 with Martin stopping the clock 2:30 behind the Swiss.
Cancellara's third career gold in the race against the clock means he equals the record set by Australia's Michael Rogers, who won the world title three years in a row from 2003 to 2005.
"It's a great result for me, I'm in great form and racing at home in front of all these Swiss flags and supporters was a huge motivation for me," said Cancellara, who is aiming for an audacious double by winning the men's road race on Sunday.
"I will see how I feel tomorrow once I've had a rest and a good massage. But thanks to the racing I did in Spain and the training I've had, I feel confident that I can win on Sunday."
The 28-year-old Swiss started second last of the 66-strong field and one minute ahead of Germany's reigning champion Bert Grabsch.
However Grabsch never got the chance to see Cancellara's back wheel as the Swiss flew off the ramp and disappeared over the horizon at break neck speed.
Crowned Olympic champion in Beijing but deciding not to compete last year in Varese, Italy due to fatigue, Cancellera had by the first time check at 9.16km stamped his authority on the race.
He dropped Martin from provisional top spot by 18secs, and went on to humiliate a bunch of challengers who had started minutes before him.
At the second time check at 16.6 km Cancellara held a lead of 38sec on Martin and 46 on Larsson.
Britain's Bradley Wiggins had been confident of a medal, but he had dropped to over a minute behind Cancellara.
The Swiss showed no signs of tiring on the 16.6km circuit, raced three times, and after overtaking Larsson the Swede attempted in vain to keep pace.
But Larsson, who said he expected Cancellara to catch him on the course, conceded: "That was actually not too bad a thing for me having him as a pacesetter."
Cancellara added: "It's a big psychological advantage to catch the guy who goes before you."
At 25.7km Cancellara was 1:17 faster than Martin, and shortly afterwards he humiliated Wiggins and Sebastien Rosseler, who had started two and four minutes ahead of him respectively, by overtaking the pair.
Wiggins then suffered disaster as he neared the end of the climb on the circuit, trying to fix an apparent problem with his front derailleur before getting off his bike and chucking it to the ground in disgust.
After Cancellara rode over the line in triumph savouring his first world title on home soil, Wiggins crossed over to finish way down in 21st place, 4:50 in arrears.
Larsson races with Cancellara at the Saxo Bank team so he was barely surprised at the Swiss's power.
"I am and always have been impressed with the kind of power that Fabian gets when he's really on form," he added.
"Me and Fabian have different kinds of muscles, different styles of riding so it's hard to compare us.
"I did what I could and really tried my best, so I'm happy with my performance today."
Martin appeared simply happy to have upstaged compatriot Grabsch.
"Grabsch in the past has been faster than me but today I was faster than him," said the German.
"I wanted to get on the podium today so I'm happy I've achieved that objective."

contador is a very different rider from cancellara. weight has no impact on gravity (physics 101) so fabian has no advantage in that respect. he is just a better technical rider, hence faster corner speed than contador. alberto could NEVER have beaten him over any course bar uphill all the way
cancellara has made me admire him more than my first admiration for the sport...ullrich. fabian is unbelievable. unlucky wiggins with the mechanical or as us electricians call it the electrical!!! i'm sure electric gearing will come on leaps and bounds over the coming years but for now, keep it to r and d and the prototypes. it just doesn't work as well as a cable yet
I seem to remember a rather large hill on the olympic course. Power hills don't bother time trialers. Maybe Fab was tired but I can't believe Conti wasn't. There was no blasting up big hills for Fab remember. It just seemed to me a result too good to be true, and you know what they say.
Maxx92, I agree,
Funny how generally healthy living cyclists having been found with tiny amounts of coke etc. in their bodies, yet these party mad footballers never show up for any party nor performance improving substances.
It all comes down to money, bribes and business interests. There is a volcano of a story there just waiting to erupt.
Contador lost advantage 40 seconds over Fabian on that ITT on TDF in last part of track, but Alberto and Wiggins is only 2 riders who could beat Fabian in ITT. Fabian is a big guy, and he had advantage over Alberto in downhills because his weight, but Alberto is small guy, his front is blocking a wind with a smaller body, and that is his advantage over Fabian, and Alberto wasnt specialist for ITT but he could get another level of that kind of ride (remember last 2 years his training for ITT), but Fabian is on his top in that kind discipline. Fabian cant be better, but Contador can, with training, next year he would beat him.
Fabian is great champion, for me his best performance was on Olymic games 2008, but in road race, when he alone get breakaway riders, unbelievable ride
contador's win in the TdF TT over cancellara was all about the cat 3 hill on the course.
there was a really good website that analyzed the TT and showed that were it not for that hill, cancellara would have won.....
so if that final TT says, to you, that contador was doped, it turns out that (in this case anyway) it was more about the course design.....
apparently, because of contador's slim build, he can tuck in more than other riders and get's an aerodynamic advantage over them.
i remember the commentators on itv4 talking about it during the coverage of the stage.
Don't forget the hill. If it was smaller or if there was another kilo of flat, Cancellara would have caught him.
@si1268 - easy answer. Contador had measured his efforts carefully and reacted/worked when he had to in the final week - he won the Tour at Verbier. Where as Cancellara had been riding on the front of the peleton for 100s of kms in support of the Schlecks. In short - Cancellara was knackered by the time the final TT came around.
If I may bring to your consideration, Reyros, that for what we have witnessed in the past, even those that have been detected, come through huffing and puffing, so in Fabian's case it must be something else.!?
Maxx92, haha that's a good one :-) but if you want to watch soccer you better not do that. The headline would be "Soccer leagues on holiday, check back in 2 years".
Let's put Real Madrid, Inter, Bayern, & Man City through a cyclists doping tests and see how they come out. Why is it that only the 50 or so cyclists in Puerto were a big deal, but none of the other 150 athletes have been followed up on? Could it be that only cycling is trying to fight doping? Maybe Real Madrid paid off the police to not investigate them. Let's stop judging cyclists because along with track & field, they are the only sports doing anything about doping. Cycling's done a great job of raising the bar in terms of finding cheats. Let's take Guti, CR9, that criminal Pepe and the rest of La Liga and put them through doping screens. Half the teams wouldn't be able to field a side this weekend.
How on earth did Contador beat Cancellara in the final TT. It raises an eyebrow at least.
In terms of justifying Cancellara's performance, you have to just look at trends/pattern over a career. It's not like a Schumacher type of situation. This is not the first time that Cancellara has blitzed the opposition, when all the other contenders have been bunched within a few seconds. Bottom line is, he is made for TTing and when everything comes together, he's just head and shoulders above the rest. Shame Contador didn't take part though.
Cancellara had the race won after 10kms, such was his dominant display. Wiggins was never really in it to win it - both Cancellara and Larsson had passed him by the time he had is 'mechanical'. Apparently, the brake caliper/block was rubbing - why didn't he just push to one side and/or loosen the cable and carry on? And these custom bike paint jobs are getting silly now...
At the finish Cancellara looked as if he's just cycled down to the local corner shop to buy a pint of milk....superhuman performance...hope he's clean!!
I dont want to start about doping again cause its not fair to always accuse everybody of doping if they do a great performance.
These are the World Championships where the best start. I just dont believe that one guy can be so much faster than all the rest. In my opinion its not possible, sorry.
cancellara is in a different league to these lads. These lads are the best cancellara is just god!!
This is not just doping, he must have a motor...
Most formidable time trial display of all time? Arguably yes.
I would love to see him have a crack at the hour, surely he'd breeze it?
